LinkedIn - Has That Platform Been Overtaken by Too Much Personal Information?

"LinkedIn users have mixed feelings about their professional contacts bringing their whole selves onto the platform" - The Wall Street Journal, August 30, 2022

On the one hand, sharing personal ups and downs, joys and sorrows can move the dial on connecting. On the other hand, it can become and has become excessive. That can deter the possibility of deepening the professional relationship.

However, the wrench in the works on this personal sharing is that: Those who do it tend to attract lots of likes and comments. Because of that I experienced the Ah-Ha Moment that I too should venture out of my businesslike persona and open up about my little life. Sure enough, when I posted about adopting a senior dog, adjusting emotionally and socially adjusting to the southwest, and feeling grateful in general attention skyrocketed.

Here's the rub. That level of personal disclosure on a professional network never did and still doesn't sit right with me. I would prefer doing that on Facebook with a small circle of those who are friends without any professional ties.

Another issue with LinkedIn is the escalation of direct sales pitches. Those are annoying. Many come through Messaging. Usually after I receive that pitch I will go to Network and delete that professional. If I want to be sold-to I will post a blurb on LinkedIn and ask for that specific kind of pitch.

In my intuitive career coaching clients also complain about the mutation of LinkedIn from a professional platform to a more sophisticated version of Instagram. The gallows humor could be that LinkedIn is the ideal placement for all those leisure travel photos.

Reflection: Maybe someone savvy in IT should set up a professional network that is all-business. It could be called "Boundaries."
