Akin Gump Julia Ghahramani's March 2021 Cocaine+ Death - So?

It had been way back more than a year ago that first-year associate at law firm Akin Gump Julia Ghahramani died from cocaine laced with fentanyl. Yet that story keeps resurfacing.

This week RollonFriday revisits it. And Reddit Big Law considers the issue if the energy from cocaine is what's making possible those 2,500 hours billed in law firms.

Is what's keeping this on the radar the hunch that use of the illegal substance cocaine is common among those practicing law? After all, in addition to being an energy-booster, it provides a nice reward for such hard-working lawyers. Also, they have the earnings to afford it. Most of the rest of gunners have to stick with boozing. So, why not?

The reality might be setting in that the death could simply have been an aberration. Think about it this way: Ghahramani had bad luck in her alleged choice of dealers. Others might be able to exert more scrutiny in overseeing the content of the illegal drugs they sold. The message could be: Do due diligence in dealer selection.

The Wall Street Journal, which resurrected this incident on October 23rd of this year, may be trying to warn professionals about looping into cocaine. A noble mission.

But like so much other coverage about the dangers of substances, illegal and legal, those exposes might only increase consumption. The folks reading about the perils of using cocaine or even Adderall might have an Ah-Ha Moment: That's how those successful people play the game - and have fun along the way. Yeah, I will try that.

Some might recall how the buzz was that eating disorders accelerated among females after Jane Fonda revealed how her bulimia. Likely she meant to do good by sharing this. However, the common takeaway could have been: That's how she stays thin. I will try it.

Meanwhile, of course, there probably will be those formal surveys about cocaine use among lawyers and law students. That will be quite earnest. But we know so little about the misuse of substances and how to nudge human beings to find less risky coping mechanisms.

BTW, the 12-step program Alcoholics Anonymous only has at the upper limit an estimated success rate of 12%. Prohibition didn’t work. Human beings seem determined to find relief from emotional pain and pleasure their way.
