Old Master, Old Tricks - Bob Dilenschneider Still Hawking Holiday Feel-Goods, Publishing Books in Visual/Auditory Era

 The world has changed.

Our industries have changed (actually, the Personal Computer seems at the end of its life cycle).

Our companies/clients have begun to panic about costs during this era of inflation and how much of that they can pass on.

And we professionals are one year older as Gen Z disrupts the future of work and has digital down cold.

Yet, some professionals haven't changed. Usually that doesn’t end well, even in less volatile times. Recall how former GE CEO Jack Welch kept up frenzied M&A to accelerate growth. He stuck with that and that is assessed to have contributed to the collapse of that once-prestigious corporation. The struggle continues to undo what he had done.

Well, here we are at the end of quite a year. Some things don’t change.

Still out there every major holiday is public relations expert Bob Dilenschneider. His MO has been to publish a feel-good reflection. Here is the one for Thanksgiving. Of course, there is a glut of the meme about focusing on our blessings. That is ripe for a skit on late night talk.

We can anticipate inspirational fare from Dilenschneider for Christmas, too. Maybe also welcoming in 2023.

Another Dilenschneider MO has been publishing books. That’s at a time when textual content is losing ground fast to visual and auditory communications.

His most recent book – “Nailing It” - had been published on December 28, 2022. It never really got off the ground. Where it stands right now is with only 13 customer reviews and an Amazon rank of 523,404.

The previous book “Decisions” didn’t do too hot either.

Even books which start out strong such as the expose on large law firms – “Servants of the Damned” – tend to start fading out rapidly. Published in September of this year it ranks on Amazon at 25,166 and only has received 124 customer reviews. No, not even dishing the dirt seems able to save the book medium.

At age 79, obviously Dilenschneider intends to stay in the game. To do that, though, this old master might have to acquire new tricks.

Already in the 90-something category media tycoon Rupert Murdoch keeps initiating change. That includes toying with the idea of reuniting Fox and News Corps. When business strategies hit a wall, such as his venture into the social network MySpace, he exited.

The time may be overdue for Dilenschneider to also change how he approaches getting himself and his public affairs firm out there. His professional life does have runway.
