Unbiased News and More: But Is It Already Too Late for All That?

" ... what public polls indicate many viewers claim to want – unbiased news. But few can agree on what that looks like or if it exists. Nor is it clear they would tune in if it did." - The Guardian, November 27, 2022.

In commercial journalism, ranging from CNN to Abovethelaw, what is experienced as "biased" is being questioned. Its positioning as an advocacy venue doesn’t get it off the hook.

In ordinary life, the rant has gotten old, along with that myriad movements such as #MeToo which emerged during less scary economic times. The focus has shifted to the need for information and insight about inflation and the marketability of skills/experience in the labor market. More and more of us have to keep working, even into our 70s.

Meanwhile fierce exposes such as "Servants of the Damned" by David Enrich and "Bully Market" by Jamie Higgins which had made an initial splash have already descended into the five-figure rankings on Amazon. Also that muckraking book "The Caesars Palace Coup" which sold briskly for a while essentially had no impact on what it attacked. Those featured are thriving in their niches.

Fox is still holding on in ratings and influence. But a lot could happen to that position of strength if the hard right continues to lose its power. What will be Fox's reach during the 2024 presidential election year? Just the reality that it is cable in this post-cord era screams its vulnerability.

Also, a major unknown is how a news and popular culture that strove to be objective versus attention-getting would play out. The risk is that it could be boring and there would be a gigantic tune-out.

Already there has been a shift from media and jaw-jawing to turning to professional anonymous networks such as Blind, Reddit, and Fishbowl. That’s for a composite presentation of what is going on in an industry, company, or departments within a company or professional service. Often the professional anonymous networks even break news. An example had been Fishbowl Big Law's briefing on the unexpected death of Paul Weiss' partner David Brown, at age 47.

The pragmatic postings and the broad-based feedback coming in provide much or all of what most need for earning a living and struggling to have more than just that in a life. Incidentally, one indictment of Abovethelaw is that it had eliminated the comment section which generated feedback on the coverage of whatever. Another criticism is that the content is too "opinionated." Speculation: RIP the trusty Opinion-Editorial.

Just as voters for the midterms had been saluted for thinking for themselves and proving the polls wrong those wanting information and perspective are finding their way to alternate sources.

Commercial journalism may be on the path to over.

Exposes titillate less.

And ordinary conversation has cooled in its intensity about points of view.

The ethos might have returned of the 1950s TV series "Dragnet." The mantra of Sgt. Joe Friday had been: The facts, Ma'am, just the facts.

The takeaway on all this for professionals like yourself? Change before you have to. Obviously distressed CNN hadn’t.

“On the menu” of services are Tarot readings, both spreads and one-card pulls. In April 2021, The New York Times featured the Tarot as a useful tool for self-awareness and introspection.
