New Graduate Reports IBM Withdrew Job Offer in Federal Consulting - What Are the Options?
"I am a senior at the
university of Maryland. Back in October I received an offer to work for IBM at
their federal consulting sector. I found out Friday they are withdrawing my
offer two weeks before graduation."
Fishbowl Consulting, April 30, 2023. Here is the thread
So far, two employees at Accenture responded with notices
of openings in the federal consulting practice. They offered to help this new
graduate loop in on those.
What we know is that, sure, this soon-to-graduate can alert
the University of Maryland career office about this development. But it is
doubtful if that or anything else done to put IBM in a bad light will
discourage other applications. After all, employment there is considered a
"good job."
We, that is those of us who were around to bear witness to
the carnage of 2008 - 2009, also know this: A snatched-back job offers is often
a signal it will be difficult to land another job in that category of
skills. Already there can be a glut of talent.
In the legal sector, which had been hit hard during The Great
Recession, there were too many who first received a delayed start date, then
eventually the notice that the job had been eliminated. Then they had to begin their
search for a job in a crowded market.
Some had to wait out
a few years to try to finally get hired practicing law somewhere. Overall, entry-level
jobs aren't plentiful. There are fewer of them now in an economy which demands hands-on
experience, often in a specialty.
Other new law graduates couldn't afford to go without a
decent salary and had made a career change. Here is the article I published
in O’Dwyer’s
Public Relations about the difficulty of career change.
What I recommend to those I coach is this: If the start
date has been delayed, re-start your job search. It is possible there could be
further delays. It is also possible that the job will vanish. No need to inform
the supposed future employer that you are out there hustling for something
else. It's in your self-interest to play all angles.
Meanwhile, grab work, any kind. Nothing gets you a job like
having a job. You present yourself with more confidence. And there is no sign
of desperation. Money is coming in. In addition, you can afford – literally –
to be selective about whom you will work for.
