EVs, ESG, Advanced Academic Degrees and More - So Misguided By The Myth of Progress

Fooled again, so many of us. 

What could be salvaged from the brief but quite earnest EV movement is the embrace of the hybrid. That would reduce the amount of gasoline consumption while bypassing the negatives of the EV. Those include low range of the charge, difficulty of finding a charge, cold weather's problems with the charge, high cost, low resale value and higher accident rate versus the gas car. 

Along with so many constituencies' enthusiasm for the EV there was the grand hope that ESG (Environmental Social Governance) was going to tame capitalism. So convinced we were of that that large law firms, beginning with Paul, Weiss, set up ESG practices to guide CEOs. In addition, corporations themselves established in-house ESG departments. Here is my article, published in O'Dwyer's Public Relations, on the post-ESG world order. 

 And how about the commitment to going to graduate/professional school for not only job security but upward mobility. For a few years now The Wall Street Journal has been blowing up those expectations. Meanwhile 20% of recent M.B.A. graduates from Harvard Business School can't even land jobs. Professional Anonymous Networks such as Blind, Fishbowl and Reddit chronicle the despair among Knowledge Workers who invested in those advanced degrees and have already been axed or fear that happening.

So, what we should be asking ourselves is: How come we had given our hearts (along with our thought-leadership opeds) over to all that? 

Well, in my intuitive coaching/Tarot reading I bear witness again and again to the need to believe that progress is taking place. That's how many of my clients frame what is. At the top of the list is the conviction that their children will have a better life than they. Maybe not necessarily in a material sense but more along the lines of peace of minds and happiness.



But suppose there is no progress? Just change? You bet, the play out of the Wheel of Fortune. It's probable that few human beings will accept that. Therefore, there will be myriad more fads and zealous supporters.

Up-or-Out: McKinsey Raises the Pressure, In Contrast Some Law Firms Ease It through Nonequity Partner Tier

" McKinsey & Co.  warned some US consultants last week they are running out of time to win promotion, raising the 'up or out' pressure on staff as the global consulting industry struggles." - Abovethefold Article in Bloomberg , March 27, 2024 This is yet another sign that once-iconic McKinsey is a professional services firm in trouble. One challenge is overcapacity of manpower. Down Memory Lane - There Was Actually a Time in When $70k for New JDs Was Big Money

  Let's cut to the chase. The year was 1987.  On a Monday in October the stock market crashed.  Corporate downsizing, made an art at GE by Jack Welch, was purging the system of middle-aged middle managers. Staples caught the wave of accidental entrepreneurs forced out of corporate careers. It created the new category of office supplies for small business.
