The "Feud: Capote vs The Swans" Effect - "Socialite," "Mercedes," "Acohol" and More Used in Covering Rebecca Grossman
Found guilty on all counts by a jury in connection with the death of two young boys, Rebecca Grossman probably won't be receiving much compassion. Note that the media headlined with and make prominent in the coverage terms such as:
Socialite
Mercedes
Alcohol
Dr. Grossman (her husband)
I classify those developments as the effects of the Hulu
streaming series "Feud: Capote vs The Swans." In particular,
Episode 5. Last Thursday that latest installment truly vilified the kinds of people who inhabit
those wealthy realms. Oh, to use one of their fav expressions: How
“dreadful” they are.
The women are self-absorbed, ultra status-conscious,
insecure, mean-spirited even to those who supposedly are their close friends,
extremely critical of others, lousy inattentive mothers, lack the intimacy
skills to keep a marriage going and often have eating disorders.
The men are compulsive about sexual conquest. Bill Paley
even beds down his wife Babe's friend Slim. They assume their professional
achievements and wealth give them a free pass to do whatever. Because they
neglect their wives emotionally those women turn to class outsider Truman
Capote for a confidant and problem-solver.
It is not unlikely that now the common man and woman will
view the privileged in major metro areas like New York and LA through the lens of the
"Feud" series.
Aren’t the females so off as human beings? (Does Rebecca
Grossman "feel" remorse about she did?)
And the men? Aren’t we going to size them up as nothing but
arrogant entities who believe that they have complete access to sexual
pleasure? Currently that dashing rich boy-man Jack F. Kennedy would have
found himself in plenty of legal trouble.
Instead of any envy for the Rich and Famous, the dominant
ethos could be ridicule. Just consider how the current Bill Paleys in media had
allegedly behaved at the office. Then lost so much. They range from Harvey
Weinstein to Matt Lauer to Les Moonves. If we had had a tenth of the
money, influence and power they had we would have been so self-protective. Recall
how the narrator in “The Great Gatsby” describes them: “They are careless
people.”
Since Leon Black has been in the penalty box way too long
and could soon receive absolution, we won't introduce his situation. Given our
Puritan background we do keep the metrics on suffering. He has gone way over
the amount expected in reversals of fortune. But he will need to, as the nuns
in Catholic grade school used to say, wipe that smirk off his face.
In intuitive coaching I advise clients in reputational
crisis to never again take on a smart-aleck persona. Leave that to the next
batch of screw-ups. Post-“Feud” more of those orbiting the top tiers of society could be made accountable. That is, "A Next Rebecca Grossman."
