Tech - If You're Not In Generative AI, You May Never Earn the Old Kind of Money Or Even Work in IT Again

"Tech Job Seekers Without AI Skills Face a New Reality: Lower Salaries and Fewer Roles" - The Wall Street Journal, March 18, 2024

Overall, last year in IT only 700 jobs were added. This year what's expected are 20,000 to 30,000 more job cuts in general IT. Also, walking into a $200,000 IT job isn't so probable. If you do land a job in IT it is likely to pay $100,000.

It's not just end-users which are switching to becoming more efficient or even disrupting processes through generative AI. Within tech that's also the direction of how work is done. Job postings for those with generative AI skills are up 42% and the average salary is $174,727.  If you don't fit in that box, your career path in IT could be over. The joke in Canada about this is: No AI expertise? Go work on an oil rig.

Note this blurb from Canada on professional anonymous network Blind:

: ... we had an opening for an SWE in my team. 1700 applicants, remote job but must be in state. Legacy stack, $85k pay. Tons of applicants were American citizens with CS degrees, 5+ years experience, even some FAANG applicants. Manager had to close the application early because so many applied.

The part of distressed McKinsey that is doing well in developing new business is the one advising on generative AI. In the other practices there's an epidemic of no work.

The intense focus on generative AI is bleeding into just about every aspect of business.

In earnings calls the terminology of generative AI has replaced that related to ESG (Environment Social Governance).

You bet, even for a non-IT job you are expected to list advanced knowledge of generative AI. What apps have you aced?

In those lines of work most vulnerable to the impact of that technology - marketing and communications - IBM recently has announced a Reduction in Force.

Big Law firm Paul, Weiss has a regular morning podcast on generative AI.

Before I start a communications project associated with my coaching practice my first stop is researching the key topics on ChatGPT. Usually that saves me about four hours per project.

Incidentally in my coaching practice no one is saying any longer that their line of work is safe from generative AI because they provide the human touch. Heck, already ChatGPT can zero in as an empathetic therapist.
