The Alarm Clock - Ghost of Career Past

"I only set the alarm clock twice. Once for the only appointment - very early - I could get with a healthcare specialist. The other was for a 5 AM flight."

This former middle manager telling me this pointed to the alarm clock as the most powerful symbol of what her career had been about. After a six-month adjustment to retirement she finally broke open to the bliss of not having to be accountable in a capitalistic way.

She came for coaching to sort out options for where to live more affordably. No, picking up some extra money through temp work or gigs was not being considered. She was not a candidate for any version of unretirement.

Admittedly, though, some in their careers don't frame their existence through depending on alarms, analogue or digital.

For example, there are Wall Street types who are wired to awake spontaneously long before financial markets open to get their ducks in the road.

The chair of elite law firm Paul, Weiss Brad Karp is known for his routine to work late into the night and requiring little sleep before he begins his day in mid-Manhatttan. I have a hunch his internal system is configured with its own unique types of alarms, both about waking up and the need for course correction.

The usual in a work life, though, is to be subjected to the oppression of the alarm clock going off.

For decades I endured that until I shifted to two lines of business in which I could schedule appointments after 10 AM.  What liberation from the traditional constraints of making a living and the angst of fearing the electricity would black out during the night, the alarm clocks (I set two) wouldn't go off and I would be "late" for whatever. That terror is socialized early. How many of us continue to have nightmares of being late for school or an exam.

In business and life you usually have only one shot at whatever. Up the odds of success with Jane Genova. I am a coach and content-creator. Complimentary consultation (please text/phone 203-468-8579 or email janegenova374@gmail.com)
