DNC's Brilliant and Beautiful PR - Audience Remained Energized (despite all those speeches)
"Anyone else enthralled by the PR strategies of the DNC? I’m Canadian so I’m viewing all this news and social coverage through a neighbourly lens ..." - Reddit Public Relations, August 22, 2024
This global fascination with the effectiveness of the DNC public relations mirrors that of world's interest in the Trump phenomenon pre-2016. My international clients wanted to jaw-jaw with me about Donald Trump's peculiar communications genius.
However, there is a difference. The Harris-Walz approach is positive, inclusive, even joyful. Kamala Harris has evolved as much into a pop culture sensation as had Trump but without the rancor which, as we bear witness to currently, wasn't sustainable. Trump has mutated into a caricature of himself at his peak.
In contrast, Harris is the reincarnation of Ronald Reagan's Morning in America, a meme that never really went away. That ethos has always been beautiful. It will always be marketable, just like the heroism of WW II is.
The proof of the public relations' extreme success is the frequent cameras' panning of the audience. Even with too many speeches which went on too long the audience remained attentive - and enthusiastic.
Ambitious public relations experts will be producing myriad case studies of the Kamala Harris miracle, reaching all the way back to the transformation of an "invisible" into the making of a charismatic leader. Recall Theodore White's "The Making of a President 1960." We will get lots more of that.
The next chapters in this amazing saga must include:
Sustaining momentum post-DNC. The GOP couldn't do that even with the material of the assassination attempt.
Figuring out what version of Trump will show up at the September 10th debate. Harris' coach for the debate Paul, Weiss partner Karen Dunn will have to stretch her imagination. There's no telling what aides and major donors could do to reshape the usual Trump public speaking persona. So much is at stake. The standard version of Trump would hand the election to Harris.
Navigate economic negative developments. Lots could happen before November 5th. According to Pew Research there are about 62 million over-65 in America. Most of us vote and all of us are in high angst about our nest eggs or lack of them as well as Social Security and Medicare.
Keep the fundraising going. The amounts themselves are media stories in themselves. Plus, advertising is so pricey. Political history will document how expensive Election 24 had been. In the beginning of all this Paul, Weiss chair Brad Karp called it: This will be the most expensive campaign ever.
Meanwhile since Harris looks like a winner there is already speculation who will get what job in her administration. A smart Pete Buttigieg is playing coy.
