Visibly Older, But Bill Clinton Still Got It

Maybe it's America's soft spot for rascals. There's our fascination with those who dare to play close to the fire, get burned, but reset - stronger and more successful. Classic in that role is Bill Clinton. There are also faux aristocrat Anna Sorokin, disgraced Wall Street player Michael Milken and techie Sam Altman who got forced out of the enterprise he founded.

Or maybe Bill Clinton simply possesses the rare gift of being able to enter into the soul of an audience and hang around there long after a speech. John Fitzgerald Kennedy also had that mystical talent.

Probably to us Clinton is both - enigmatic bad boy and a speaker who can transport.

Tonight at the DNC, while looking visibly old, a bit frail and with trembling hands, he immediately unleashed an electric force field. That was obvious when the camera panned the audience, which was often. Here is that performance art.

That started out with the question: Aren't you proud to be a Democrat?

With eloquence he saluted Joe Biden's stepping down as "class."

He zeroed in on Donald Trump's self-involvement simply by comparing all those "I" statements with Kamala Harris' use of "you."

Brilliant was the reference to McDonald's. Harris had worked there.  Clinton had consumed too much of its products which had shown up in his snug jogging shorts outside the White House. Of course, the joke was on him.

The challenge, though, is to sustain the high of the DNC, which Clinton brought to another level. The GOP couldn't after its own euphoric RNC. The Obamas warned that Election 2024 will be tough. Master fundraiser Paul, Weiss chair Brad Karp already had made clear it would also be expensive - the most expensive ever.

Lots can happen between this week in Chicago and November 5th. For instance, there is the debate September 10th. GOP aides and wealthy donors could knock Trump out of his dazed state and retrofit him as a leader. The nation bore witness to how Harris was transformed from almost invisible to a celebrity presence. The art of repositioning and repackaging has no limits.

The mission for Democrats is two-fold: 1) Maintain the mometum and 2) Keep the money coming in.
