Pack a Lunch - Life, as We've Known It, Is Collapsing
Even sexual titillation has become less marketable - at least if it's featured as part of the ambiance in a restaurant. Hooters is filing for bankruptcy. Traffic has been down.
Overall, in America eating out has become a luxury that more and more choose not to indulge in.
That includes fast food. Eighty percent classify swinging by for fries or a fish sandwich as no longer allowable on their budget. At McDonald's USA sales are down.
Hooters is the tip of the iceberg in restaurants filing for bankruptcy. Last September BurgerFi also did such a filing. Red Lobster has emerged from its bankruptcy.
So, we have become a nation which eats at home and packs a lunch for when we're away from home. On hold is the treat of stopping at different restaurants when enjoying a day or weekend outing. At rest stops along the freeways I notice more and more folks at picnic tables unpacking a cooler of food and beverages.
This is one more sign that life, as we've known it, is collapsing.
There, for example, is no predictability in getting, holding and moving on to better work.
The marketability of those pricey academic degrees, including the M.B.A., has plunged.
Even prominent lawyers have become part of the glut of talent in the legal sector. They scramble to find jobs as a result of the change of administration. It could be crudely said that legal star former Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams was fortunate to land a plum partner position in the private sector - law firm Paul Weiss.
Forget the American Dream of buying a house.
The scope of this shift, of course, impacts social values. We are hardening into less compassion. Even the most polite belt out: I don't want to hear it. Think twice before asking anyone for a favor.
But this one thing is predictable: the time lag.
In my intuitive coaching and tarot reading I'm still bearing witness to those not yet embracing the new world order. Some clients continue to feel agitated about not receiving a promotion. Such a lament is also still popping up on professional anonymous networks Blind, Fishbowl, Reddit and Glassdoor. This is an era of flattening of levels, lessening the possibility of promotions. The reality is: Feel blessed that you do have a job or enough contract work.
Only the oldest of the boomers can recall how the lifestyle was before post-WWII affluence kicked in. Actually, it was much like today.
My Depression-era parents packed all the food we would be chowing down, even away at the hot free beach. No worry about spoilage. It was a different time.
That bias against eating out hung on with them. The one time they did pop for a restaurant - and it was a nice one - was at my college graduation when we hosted my major professor and her husband.
Yes, we could be circling back to what should not be part of the standard budget.
