Auto Tariffs, HHH RIF, Uptick in Lateral Hiring Push Paul Weiss Off Digital Front Page

Thursday, March 27th might go down in the Paul Weiss memory bank as the blessed day it was no longer the hot news.

It has been pushed off the digital front page as well as on professional anonymous networks Reddit and Fishbowl by other shock developments. They are the 25% auto tariff and massive Reduction in Force at HHH.

In addition, young lawyers who felt uncomfortable working at Paul Weiss or participating in its recruiting efforts now know that they have a place to go. The lateral market, lousy for two years, increased 14% recently.

However, a sign that once fresh and fun Abovethelaw is no longer fresh or fun is that today it still showcases two attacks on Paul Weiss, one a text piece, another a podcast. On Substack I detail the decline of ATL. Essentially Reddit has overtaken its territory.

A Gen Z entrepreneur might pitch to Brad Karp custom-made tee shirts to be delivered in April 2025. They would be imprinted with: March 2025. Over.

The oldest adage in business is: Hold on, soon enough some other organization or some other person will be taking the heat. That's what I tell my intuitive coaching/tarot-reading clients.

Welcome back to opining on thought leadership topics, Brad.

BREAKING NEWS:

Breaking news. Elite law firm Skadden could be adopting the dealmaking model used by Paul Weiss.

The New York Times reports:

“The elite law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom has had discussions with President Trump’s advisers about a deal to avert the type of executive order that the White House has been imposing on many of its competitors, according to five people briefed on the matter who were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations."
