Saint Rachel Brings Her Justice Message to the UK - Average Run for Influencers is Eight Years

Decades ago - remember the counterculture? - a stint in activism provided an excellent political education. Later I was hired to be a research assistant for a senator.

Now, the gain can be so much more. And so we wonder if former Skadden associate Rachel Cohen is on the way to becoming a powerhouse wealthy influencer. Among youth that is the dream.

While at Skadden she was a busy bee, including transmitting an open letter to-be-signed protesting what Donald Trump was up to in focusing on the rule of law. She challenged her employer to do the right thing or she would leave.

According to her they didn't do the right thing and she left. Skadden stayed mum throughout the drama and blocked her email. With great glee, those who dislike what Big Law seems to represent can imagine how this upstart proved such a nuisance to the brass. In the front lines was there the CMO Luke Ferrandino? How many heads needed to be put together to decide the blocking move? What great material for "SNL."

Okay, smirk, Skadden was having none of this Norma Rae kind of public outcry against perceived injustice. As we all know, late last week Skadden, like Paul Weiss, did cut a deal with the administration. Both have been designated as the bad guys. Perkins Coie, Wilmer Hale and Jenner and Block are among the good guys.

Cohen can became a global symbol of being on the right side of the integrity of the rule of law.  British legal tabloid RollonFriday features Cohen's outreach in the UK. She's seeking solidarity in opposing what the Trump administration is all about. RollonFriday quotes her message:

“UK lawyers at (and UK clients of) American law firms currently targeted by the President have the same capacity to pressure the firms to take action and present a united front refusing to accept the President's acquiescence as U.S. lawyers and clients ... if not more, given that y'all seem to have clearer eyes about what's happening."

Given that the Trump administration has almost four years left (maybe four after that) and for very conservative ideology that could be extended to eight more and beyond, Cohen could have a long runway in being an influencer. The average run for being an influencer is about eight years. On Tiktok she already has 227.7K followers.

Careers take many different routes. Cohen could make it bigger in the world of influence and have more fun than enduring the seeming powerlessness of being a junior associate in a very large law firm.  Even if she made it to partner then she would be for way too long only a junior partner.

This comes down to risk-taking, of course. With so much volatility I guide my clients on assessing risk and how to mitigate it.
