AI Hired at Publication Il Foglio - Doesn't Balk When Told to Rewrite

We journalists (that's how I started out my former 30-year career in communications) tend to bristle when editors tell us: Rewrite. Usually we argue why the article is strong, the way it is. After all, the writing is pulled from our inner being.

Well, the two editors at Italian publication Il Foglio don't have to deal with that pushback when telling ChatGPT to redo an article. That, of course, makes "hiring" ChatGPT more attractive than having to deal with journalists with lots of ego.

Since March of this year at Il Foglio Claudio Cerasa has been piloting an AI experiment. That is a four-page insert with ChatGPT-created articles and headlines. Two hands-on editors oversee the style and content, including the inaccuracies AI is known to generate. And, yes, it will instruct ChatGPT to rewrite.

The world is watching. And that's not only those in the media loop.

Those in professional services, for example, produce plenty of high-stakes content. Be that a slide deck in a management consulting firm or a lawsuit for a client at a law one.

When that comes back to the content-creator for a rewrite, usually a junior in the firm, there could be tension and additional time needed to be invested in the project. Not so with ChatGPT. AI will just do it and rapidly.

No surprise, McKinsey announced it is already using AI - that's platform Lilli - for slide decks as well as proposals. McKinsey also states that won't eliminate junior jobs. We wonder about that. At Paul Weiss law firm chair Brad Karp is more transparent. He goes on record that that AI could wipe out some junior jobs. Watchers of the legal sector know how AI can take over the grunt work of research, document review and simple contracts. How long will it be before hiring of newly minted law school graduates nosedives?

Afterwards, with ChatGPT revised content, there will be no posting on professional anonymous networks such as Reddit or Fishbowl about the details of the process. For instance, the human associate decries that the partner mandated the changes at 11 PM on a Saturday. Or that the junior is terrified about being put on a PIP (proposal to improve performance) because of the need for extensive modifications.

Removing the human from whatever can eliminate so much of the emotion that clogs the moving parts. And it could also prevent the ranting that dings the organization's brand in the court of public opinion.

It could come down to having to justify being hired for a job instead of the organization's hiring AI. What value would you be creating?
