Vibe Shift - The New Way to Get Elected, Sell Stuff, Get Hired, Keep Your Job

 Find common ground. 

That's what Zohran Mamdani is doing to move the dial from being the Democratic Party nominee for mayor of New York to actually being elected. For example, at a tech conference he praised Michael Bloomberg who funded Mamdani's opponent in the primary - Andrew Cuomo. That puts him in that tent. Hopefully, comfortably.

That's also the promotional strategy commercial brands are pursuing. They are appealing to where consumers are, not pushing change-agent causes. Probably that approach will dominate the Super Bowl ads. 

And if you want to get hired and then keep your job you'll have to figure out the intersection between what you have to offer the employers and how to package it and what exactly they need, at the time. Add to that what kind of person they want on team. In assessing how applicants performed on AI screeners I had to stay in the check boxes of what was required. There was no wiggle room. On the job you have to figure out the prevailing norms within the organization for your daily interactions. Are traditional gender roles back?

This signals the growing strength of what is being called The Vibe Shift. Like the late 1960s counterculture it has impact on so many facets of politics, business, work and ordinary life. The drivers include:

Breakdown in influence. Note that what's shared as humor doesn't wait for the monologue on a late show. You can make fun of whatever immediately on social media. Then there's fading legacy media. The Maga influencers put The Wall Street Journal in its place after it pounced on Donald Trump in EpsteinDisclosureGate. Major funders for the Cuomo mayor run, ranging from Michael Bloomberg to the leadership of Paul Weiss, weren't able to deliver on the traditional role of money and winning campaigns.

Inflation. Things have gotten really scary. Money issues for ordinary people mandate total pragmaticism. In general, the mysticism of psychic services is less and less in demand. My tarot reading practice is holding up because my branding is "no nonsense." Brands have to convince consumers that what they purchase provides real value. Otherwise, buyers will bypass the brand and go directly to the discount version of mac & cheese.

Oh, so tired. As a nation we have been through so much since the turn of the century. Think about it: 9/11, The Great Recession, COVID, a radical administration and the Black Swan of Generative AI. Hold your causes, unless that brings us something directly.  

Predictably, the ability to adapt - Adaptability Intelligence - has become more important than even Emotional Intelligence. Smart players and institutions will take on the protective coloring of the Vibe Shift. No need to believe. Belief is so irrelevant. No one cares how you think. It's how you behave.
