Influence: Old-line Blogging Still Has Reach

The blog seems so, well, dino.

It dates back to 1999. As the years rolled by and video social networks/podcasts became where to be for influence, professionals would ask me in our coaching session: Is blogging worth it? That is, is there enough of a payoff for investing resources in operating a blog? Or even posting a guest op-ed on someone else's blog?

The answer is "yes."

Bloomberg Law reports that there was a post on legal blog Volokh Conspiracy advocating combatting the Trump administration. That was through a pair of judicial doctrines. Singled out was one that mandates that the executive branch needs the authority of Congress to make rules about issues of economic significance. The post was by Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University.

The blog content got noticed by the right people. They directly questioned the legality of the administration's tariffs.

And tomorrow the US Supreme Court will begin a review of that issue, which really is a questioning of the limits of presidential power.

Because of the importance of this, SCOTUS will speed up its decision-making. The ruling will be made public before the summer.

So, yes, blog.

But unlike the early days of blogging you have to also do a lot more than that for influence.

For example, the big bang usually comes through repurposing the original post on social networks ranging from LinkedIn to X.

In addition, consider a podcast. Early in the AI game, law firm Paul, Weiss introduced the Waking Up with AI podcast.

Video YouTube and TikTok? Of course.

As for graphic content, OpenAI is among the vendors which provide gee-whiz DIY tools for that.

In-person has also returned as a powerhouse communications channel. Be out there. Stanford Graduate School of Business professor Jeffrey Pfeffer lists showing up as a fundamental of getting, holding and growing power. But you have to do that with signature style.

Thrown off your game, maybe the first time since you started working? You made all the right moves and then the world moved in another direction.
