See Differently: No More Becoming an Adult

 

When you grow up. That's what parents, teachers, clergy and more used to dump on youth. But, what if it is no longer possible to grow up. That is, become an adult.

The odds ae against transitioning from the no-responsibility phase of human life to the burdens of growing up.

With scooters and e-bikes, no need to get a driver's license. Remember how that used to be a rite of passage.

That first job may never happen. Various forms of Universal Basic Income will have to kick in around the world. That is, if leaders intend to prevent riots.

Having famlies. Forget it. Way too expensive. Employers used to choose to hire those with families because they assumed that responsibility matured them. 

Home ownership. Why bother. The multi-generation household is becoming standard. As the oldest of the boomers I grew up in one of those. Our immigrant clan got by, even when several members were out of work. 

So, society's whole approach to youth has to shift. We have to see that they don't have to become adults. Hold the "responsibilty" talk. 

In coaching/tarot-reading I am witnessing the death of ambition. Just making it has become okay. Not making it is less a source of shame. Anyway, look at who dominate the corridors of capitalism. Rogues like Larry Summers. Does being an adult mean expecting those you supposedly help to come across with "benefits."
