PA Gov Josh Shapiro Legitimizes Using Term "Sh*t"
Conversational. Authentic. Plainspeak. Touching directly on pain points.
That's what's expected in communications.
And that's what Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro accomplishes in the video kicking off his re-election campaign. In it he leverages his Get Sh*t Done branding. Explicitly in the video Gov Shapiro boasts that on his watch PA "Got the sh*t done." The backdrop visuals feature what got done.
Since Gov Shapiro, as The New York Times documents, is seeking to build a national profile, we can conclude that this is happening: The term "sh*t" in formal discourse has been legitimized.
From informal discourse, we sure know how effective using the term is. When we do use it, whether from a place of authority or just that of everyman/everywoman, a line has been crossed. The movement is from standard polite rhetoric to hey-I-mean-business. For example, the pest continues to deliver unsolicited advice. So, I cross the line: "What's this advice sh*t all about. You're not my lover. You're not my shrink. You're not my 12-step sponsor. Cut the sh*t."
So, here we are. The Gov has opened a new door in official communications.
We can envision Pope Leo XIV, in the front lines of humanism, taking advantage of on this option: "Thie strongman sh*t has to stop. And, together we can do that. Let's take back our power."
Badly roughed-up because of his pro-bono dealmaking with the Trump administration chair of law firm Paul, Weiss Brad Karp can establish a position of strength: "This sh*t talk about me isn't moving any needles. What can move needles toward human dignity objectives is this. Realistic priorities."
And, Harvard University president Alan Garber can reassure that community: "This sh*t we're being hit with on all fronts is just a blip in our history since 1636. Here, let me tell you about other sh*t that went down ..."
All they have to do is walk through that door. The risk might be not walking through the door and coming across as inauthentic.
