Search for Work - Maybe You Should Stop Looking to Do What You Used to

Both The Wall Street Journal and BusinessInsider present snippets of those looking for work and unable to find it. But, a core problem with their search - which should be obvious - isn't being addressed. 

That's this: They are seeking employment in sectors such as marketing and public relations, where they had had great careers and high earnings, which are rapidly contracting. Driving the squeeze are AI and cost-efficiency. 

Sure, hunt in familiar territory. Nothing happening? Then, instead of continuing to hunt when there are no results, see differently how to make a living. That's the meme at the Toledo Museum of Art.


Where are they hiring? And how can you get in? 

Age is no excuse for not reinventing yourself. In my 70s, as content-creation was collapsing, I beefed up my credentials in other lines of work. To build my new professional identity and create referrals I provided lots of "free samples." Within about seven months I was back earning a living.

Another option is the solopreneur route. In that, age has proved to be on your side. But no matter your generation, the success rate is amazing. More than 70% generate a profit the first year. Find a gap in what people need/want and develop a service/product to fill it. 

One client connected the dots that the elderly in neighborhoods needed friendly low-cost handyman services. They are back earning a living after a bout of unemployment after a layoff from a nonprofit hit with budget cuts. Like me, they gave out free samples.

Struggling to hold on to a career path which has lost its runway can result in years wasted. They could have been invested in a reset. Meanwhile you lose your confidence, savings and more. 

Classic are academics during the recent implosion of higher education. They chase adjunct teaching positions. Low-paid. Uncertain to be renewed. And dead end. That pattern is currently typical on how smart people are tumbling down into the poverty zone.

Success is a mental game. Failure comes from being done in by the “committee” in your head.

Mr. Paul Weiss Goes to Washington

In college, backgrounders state that Brad Karp, the long-time chair of law firm Paul Weiss, toyed with the idea of a career path in politics. The specific focus was about running for Congress. Instead, though, he accepted admission to Harvard Law School (turned down the one to Yale) and that was that. Now, during the current crisis for law firms, under comprehensive attack by the Trump administration, Karp seems to be showcasing his inner politico. The guy is a smart strategist. Semafor reports that Karp has gone to Washington. There his objective seems to be to create lines of communication with a power force which, as Steve Bannon puts it, wants his firm and other elite firms out of business. Already Paul Weiss has lost one client as a result of an Executive Order. Skadden's Rachel Cohen, Brave or Reckless? - Meanwhile Heat on CMOs to Position and Package Law Firms' Stances/Silence

Legacy media such as The New York Times, professional anonymous networks like Reddit and social media such as Blue Sky.
