When to Give Up Looking for Job in Your Field? That's Not the Core Issue ...
Let's cut to the chase. Most unemployed knowledge workers come to me for a complimentary consultation when their sources of income run out. Those include severance, unemployment, savings and investments. At that point, of course, they're in a panic. But there's still the residue of magical thinking. They ask me when they should give up hunting for a job in their field.
That's not the issue.
The issue is this: How to keep bringing in income to pay the bills while they figure out the next. Had they asked me before the money ran out I would have dished common sense. That's this. Unless you have money coming in, no matter your future career path, you're not in a position of strength. Not to make wise decisions. Not how you network. Not how you present yourself in interviews. Meanwhile, unless you have family to move in with, you could wind up homeless.
To keep up cash flow might mean grabbing a survival job, any job. Not only does that goes toward being able to keep a roof over your head. It resets you in being work-ready, self-confident and out of the isolation of sitting at home applying obsessively for jobs in your field. In the tarot that condition of being lost and not knowing it is symbolized by the Nine of Wands.
In addition, there's that old adage which is on-the-money: Nothing gets work like having work.
Work puts you out there. You tell co-workers about what you could be doing. They might have heard of something. Your manager often will feel empathy about this reversal of fortune you've undergone. They tend to want to help. Mine did after my sector collapsed post-9/11 and I took a security guard job in a big box. They even transmitted my marketing ideas to headquarters.
While at the survival whatever, you begin to consider other ways to make a good living. That's because you're not frozen in fear. Look, you might say to yourself, I had never thought I could be transporting the elderly to doctors' appointments. Maybe I can get licensed for long-distance driving.
You go out for a drink with co-workers. Welcome back to the human race.
With the return of confidence you can play with the idea of becoming a solopreneur.
Takeaway: Never ever come close to letting the money run out. The financial downward trajectory can accelerate fast. Stabilize the funds situation. The rest will fall into place. Yes, that could mean a career change. Or luck getting back into your field. Or starting a micro business or even something quite grandiose.
Success is a mental game. Failure comes from being
done in by the “committee” in your head.
