BoomerVille: 8 PM ET, So What Do We Have Here

The release of more than 3 million pages of the Epstein files and again the world is gawking at what the rich and famous have allegedly got caught doing. But here we Boomers are, as usual, on a Sunday evening preoccupied how the market will open Monday morning - and then proceed the rest of the week. Time is not on our side in waiting for what could be big losses to turn around and go in the opposite direction.

It's now 8 PM ET and Dow futures are down. So far, lost is 143 points. 

Who isn't concerned about ROI on AI. So far it seems lots of projecting.  Not much of the hard numbers happening in real time. And we've been there before. 

Also pulling down the overall market is that health insurers are spooked with the proposed unexpectedly low rate of increase for Medicare Advantage. So many of us seniors love Medicare Advantage. Now we worry if the insurers will drop that option.

And how much is the wild weather denting economic growth? No one I know is out shopping. 

Meanwhile a nurse once told me that I would age well if I took care of my teeth. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a dental specialist to see if a root canal can save a tooth. Not cheap, especially since many of those specialists are not in the Medicare Advantage network.

Am I imagining it or did our parents enjoy golden years after they finished with full-time jobs? Few Boomers I encounter, even those sitting pretty financially, seem to be in a good emotional, social and spiritual space. The angst is palpable. It wasn't supposed to be this way.

Success is a mental game. Failure comes from being done in by the “committee” in your head.

Newly Minted PhDs in Economics Face Unwelcoming Job Market: Of Course, I Left My PhD in Humanities Off the Resume

Monitor postings on Reddit subunits focused on careers and it's no longer news that PhDs, both newly minted and those already in the labor market, generally are finding the credential an obstacle in the search for a job or even contract assignments. No, not an asset.  Let's cut to the chase. The highly educated have to get smart about this, fast. With some exceptions, I advise those I coach to leave the PhD off job-search materials. The negative assumptions among those hiring range from that you expect too much money to you'll be a know-it-all.  When my boutique collapsed post-9/11 and I had to land a survival job I lopped off everything but the BA. Mr. Paul Weiss Goes to Washington

In college, backgrounders state that Brad Karp, the long-time chair of law firm Paul Weiss, toyed with the idea of a career path in politics. The specific focus was about running for Congress. Instead, though, he accepted admission to Harvard Law School (turned down the one to Yale) and that was that. Now, during the current crisis for law firms, under comprehensive attack by the Trump administration, Karp seems to be showcasing his inner politico. The guy is a smart strategist. Semafor reports that Karp has gone to Washington. There his objective seems to be to create lines of communication with a power force which, as Steve Bannon puts it, wants his firm and other elite firms out of business.
