The Other Legal Story of the Decade: New General AI Tools Threaten Current Legal Software Providers + Implications for Lawyer Manpower

Since the release of the 3 million pages of Epstein Files last Friday the legal story of the decade has been: Epstein's close ties to prominent lawyers, both in-house and in law firms.

The latest headline in Bloomberg Law, for example, is the unrest at Goldman Sachs about the disclosures that its top lawyer Kathy Ruemmler received everything from expensive gifts to career help from Jeffrey Epstein. Meanwhile Reddit keeps updating about what could be going on at Paul, Weiss now that it's known of chair Brad Karp's social encounters with Epstein.

But all that could soon dwarf to a less captivating story. Especially for those in the equities market. The Wall Street Journal headlines with how recent advanced in general AI are threatening big companies which provide legal software services. In addition, this could finally wake up junior lawyers and law schools that the realities of how AI tools could take over much of legal work could happen sooner than that has been projected.

Specifically, WSJ notes:

" ... investors homed in on Anthropic’s announcement that it was adding new legal tools to its Cowork assistant meant to help automate a number of legal drafting and research tasks."

In a comment following the article there is this:

"Anthropic is moving from being just a "model provider" (like Claude) to an application layer provider. The new tools they announced can automate things like NDA triage, contract reviews, and compliance workflows—tasks that historically have been the bread and butter of these billion-dollar companies ..."

Among those billion-dollar companies potentially impacted is Thomas Reuters. The stock closed at 125.41, down 23.59, that is a decline of 15.83%.

SAAS (software as a service) could collapse as an industry.

Lots of lawyers and techies could be transitioning to fresh ways to earn a good living.

Meanwhile the drama generated by the most recent release of the Epstein Files holds onto its intensity.
