Kathy Ruemmler Testifying for House Oversight Committee - Distancing from Goldman Sachs, Paul, Weiss' Brad Karp Gets to Move On
The House Oversight Committee investigating Jeffrey Epstein has requested former Obama administration/Latham lawyer and current Goldman Sachs general counsel Kathy Ruemmler to testify. Here is the coverage by CNBC.
What's interesting in her response - which is "yes" - is that the spokesperson is her personal public relations representative Jennifer Connelly. Not a member of the public affairs staff at Goldman Sachs. Obviously, there is a distancing of her from the corporation.
Three weeks ago she had agreed to step down. But surprisingly that won't be until June 30th.
That date has remained set, despite more information coming out about her relationship with Epstein. For example, The New York Times recently did a comprehensive expose of elite medical doctors and medical centers looped in with Epstein. In it, Ruemmler was cited as using those services. Epstein oversaw that to the point that he reminded her to schedule her mammogram.
That didn't move up the date of the exit. But one wonders now that testimony will occur, will Ruemmler's spokesperson indicate the departure will be sooner, so the appearance before the Committee won't be a distraction? The tentative date for the testimony is April 21.
Meanwhile, another prominent lawyer ensnared in the Epstein web - Paul, Weiss' Brad Karp - has been allowed to move on from the Epstein files. In a sense that had been made official by The American Lawyer article documenting that clients have stuck by him.
Karp is smoothly sliding back into his role as full-time high-profile litigator. That was the identity that he had established at the firm before he was voted in as chair at the age of 48 in 2008. His prominence in that Wall Street litigation hyper niche naturally gave him the signature of rainmaker. It has been said he continues to oversee a nine-figure book of business.
The Karp narrative has shifted. Unlike Karp, Ruemmler may not be able to practice law again, at least not in any elite manner. It's been floated that with her stock options she could launch a non-profit for a good cause. Overall, she's been pounded in the media and more of that could come with the testimony.
Could it be speculated that some of that results because she might, unlike Karp, not be very likable? Her harsh comments about the overweight alienated many of us. Also, she referred to White House matters as "crap." How many of us would die to have been associated with a White House administration?
In coaching I hammer the importance of likability. In the classic on power - "The Power Game" by Hedrick Smith - it's cited as one of the key moving parts in the force fields of influence. During his ordeal as the Epstein files were released Karp had many supporters. Among their concerns, they told me, was for his health. In January 2024, he had a major cardiac event. I've been tracking his career since 2020. I like the guy.
