"Retirement" - Could Just Mean No Longer Taking on So Much Stress
"I retired because my health couldn't take it."
This man, a mental health professional, made clear though that he was still able and willing to work. Not just conducting therapy sessions. The stress, which worsened several medical conditions, he determined was because he wasn't a pill doctor. He really did do old-fashioned talk sessions.
For him "retirement" meant admitting he could no longer handle the demands of his long-term career. And that might be how more of us Boomers, Xers and Yers approach aging. There could be biting the bullet on why the high-paying job or enterprise had to be abandoned. You don't have to be especially in-touch with your mind and body to get when that time comes.
The psychiatrist came for coaching to test out whether some possible nexts were total fantasies or doable in terms of yielding some income. They had worked since teenage years and couldn't face the rest of a life without income from labor.
Would teaching music be realistic, that is, could there be a fit between a man in his 70s and the market?
What about buying a hot dog stand near a park?
Or, getting a real estate license for being a rental agent?
What surfaced during our session was how much they had enjoyed a teen job stacking shelves. Complete control. Visually pleasing. As those who have looked into that job category know, there is demand for that as well as unpacking shelves for delivery.
Of course, for those alternatives to a career the need for prestige has to be shaken off. I was skeptical if this particular knowledge worker could be comfortable in a mode of making a few bucks that required wearing one of those cute hats.
Through contacts they landed gigs teaching music in group homes and rehabs.
What I advise those in their late 50s and beyond is this: Let yourself envision breaking free of what kind of work may have started to sap your zest for life. Or worse. That for you might be "retirement." Then go on from there. Income is still possible. Maybe lots of it.
Success is a mental game. Failure comes from being
done in by the “committee” in your head.
Together, we liberate your thinking. Then we change
your story. And, unleash success. Meanwhile, we focus on bringing in income.
That puts you in a position of strength.
