Work Didn't Come in: UK's Knights plc Lays Off Partners, Senior Associates, Paralegals in Leeds

 This time the axe falls on lawyers, not just professional staff. That's what's getting attention. The UK's Knights plc has been known for laying off service workers as redundant during mergers. 

The story this time involves partners and senior associates, along with paralegals at the Leeds location. And the reason is different. As RollonFriday documents, the expected work didn't come in.

However, CEO David Beech is jolly confident the work will eventually come in. Meanwhile those professionals were sent packing.

When lawyers get caught in a layoff a tense feeling goes through the global legal sector. That's especially the situation during the intersection of so many economic and political factors. The situation is making for fear of a worldwide financial downturn. 

This morning Dow futures are down. AI is such a wild card. In the US the job market news is disappointing. Worldwide gas prices surge. And the unpredictable Trump administration has about three more years to go.

The legal market here in the US in 2026? Thomson Reuters projects a contraction. There is grassroots buzzing about another 2008. If that plays out it could come down to what accounts lawyers are associated with.  

Those of us there back then recall that Brad Karp, newly installed as chair at Paul, Weiss, was among the few who didn't conduct a RIF. In just one day Latham cut more than 400. Junior lawyers who didn't get in front of those layoffs, bailing out when signs of the worsening economy flickered, often couldn't even land non-legal survival jobs. Job offers also were rescinded. Meanwhile, the typical monthly nut for education loans was $700.

In coaching I am hearing ramped-up angst about employment insecurity throughout sectors. In California that has seeped into higher criteria for screening renters for leases. Even at a local Buddhist temple, headquarters for serenity, there is chatter about the role of AI on not only jobs but how work is done.

Newly Minted PhDs in Economics Face Unwelcoming Job Market: Of Course, I Left My PhD in Humanities Off the Resume

Monitor postings on Reddit subunits focused on careers and it's no longer news that PhDs, both newly minted and those already in the labor market, generally are finding the credential an obstacle in the search for a job or even contract assignments. Epstein Files: People We Don't Like, Including Kathryn Ruemmler.

 T hose getting the brunt of the bad publicity and even loss of titles (like Leon Black and Larry Summers) because of the Epstein connection could be taking such a hit because of this simple reality: We don't like them. Across sectors, likability is the survival platform. On that list on unlikables could be added top lawyer at Goldman Sachs Kathryn Ruemmler. The Wall Street Journal just published a very long-form analysis of her relationship with the late disgraced pedophile.  Internally, she could be on thin ice: "The extent of their relationship has drawn scrutiny inside Goldman Sachs, where the 54-year-old lawyer is general counsel and a top adviser to CEO David Solomon."  Those who can decode corporatespeak point to the red flags in sizing up her chance of holding onto her job.
