Bright Spot in Dismal Labor Market for Class of 2026: X-Rated Economy
This is the kind of opportunity that self-confident 2026 graduates from the Ivy League might look into: the whole continuum of the sex economy. That is, all those x-rated activities, ranging from soft porn to operating in a location such as Germany or the Netherlands where the exchange of sex for money is legal.
The March 21st - March 27th 2026 edition of The Economist documents the monetary aspects of the global sex economy. Here are snippets:
Porn - $100 billion
OnlyFans - $7 billion
Exchange of Sex for money - 0.6% of females over 15 of age
Virtual companionship - to be determined.
Meanwhile government policies and technology keep expanding the reach of this, one of the oldest of businesses.
However, because of the stigma embedded in the sex economy, as university researcher Stef Adriaenssens points out in "Sex Work By Numbers," only 5% of studies dig into the market factors. That is, the nature of supply and demand and how pricing impacts the dynamics. That could prevent players from becoming more competitive.
Given the stigma, the educated seeking opportunity might not be aware what the niches offer. Those include the more tradition-minded among the Class of 2026.
See, the professional edge Ivies give is the ability to risk going up against the linear career paths. Actually, for those like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg they had such a robust mindset for this that they embraced the risk of leaving an Ivy before the degree. The reality, though, for all 2026 graduates is that linear careers no longer exist. In their place is openness to opportunity.
But stigma can be a powerful deterrent. The historical negative branding might have been part of what pushed OpenAI to back off its plan for erotica for ChatGPT. Currently OpenAI is on the defense.
In addition, the whole Jeffrey Epstein phenomenon could distract from the legitimate business dynamics of x-rated activities.
Another obstacle to entering this sector is lack of the appropriate creativity. Typically there needs to be provocative pleasure-oriented positioning and packaging. Nothing stale. At least if you want to function at the high end.
Desperation may motivate the educated to consider this option. Youth and their parents who come to me for coaching or a tarot reading are at that tipping point.
What could deter them from moving in that direction, though, is the old-line option: deciding, after not being able to find a job, to matriculate for an advanced degree. Sadly, their picks, as I am finding out, such as anthropology could compound their unmarketability. As for law school, smirk. SCOTUS chief justice John Roberts, Paul, Weiss partner Brad Karp and head of Quinn Emanuel John Quinn all warn that AI will dry up demand for junior lawyers.
