Mythos and More: Now That the End Could Be in a Few Years

In the Spring edition of Vanity Fair, Joe Hagen nails it in his article on AI. He reports:

"Nobody really knows how to build guardrails that work."

So, here we are with breaking news that business and government leaders are meeting to discuss the implications of Anthropic's Mythos. They know that no one knows. As Anthropic itself describes Mythos, which hasn't been released (with exceptions):

" ... is capable of identifying and then exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities in every major operating system and every major web browser when directed by a user to do so."

The user could be a madman. Or an alleged non-truthteller like OpenAI's Sam Altman, as positioned and packaged in The New Yorker.

Therefore, the end could be near. Some estimates are within a few years. Sure, Anthropic can hold back its Mythos. But others, putting profit ahead of safety, could develop their own version. A bad actor user could hack into the systems which could destroy life on earth.

The gallows humor in the Hagen article includes snippets - given that end-of-civilization scenario - about no longer being concerned about paying the high price for medical insurance. The takeaway could be to skip that bill. Enjoy the money now. No need to fret about your health. Boomer mascot Alfred E. Neuman predicted these times with his meme: What, Me Worry.

Apply that end-of-it-all to other kinds of here-and-now investments. Take the law school one. Not only the money. What about the blood, sweat and tears?

Already US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, Paul, Weiss partner Brad Karp and Quinn Emanuel founder John Quinn have projected significantly reduced demand for junior lawyers because of AI. Too many haven't heeded this warning.

Now, with the threat of Mythos to the very continuation of life, they might hesitate to send in their deposit to hold a seat for the fall semester. Instead, live up life. Probably streaming services are developing films about how people are doing just that. Streaming services might not classify those in the genre sci-fi.

Me? I already am considering my current frugality folly. Should a suicidal hacker blow us up in the near future all that reserve in my two checking accounts and funds in my Edward Jones investment funds will also be blown up. Unused. So, should I do what I want to do now? Pricing be damned. Flee the affordable midwest for London?

Mythos could accelerate the psychic change already going on. Essentially it's: Planning is totally 20th century. The rug has been pulled from under too many knowledge workers who planned their careers ever so carefully.
