The Cool of Being an Influencer Isn't So Cool in Some Sectors
"Partners - what do you think of associates with very outspoken social media pages (like Twitter) and tweeting under their full name?"
Posted on Fishbowl Big Law. Here is the thread.
Most of the replies to that posting in the large law-firm sector are thumbs-down.
There are even two mentions of influencers during law school days who kept it up after they got a "grown-up" job. Within a year they had lost that good job in Big Law. There may or may not be any correlation with the social postings and getting the boot. The reason for the termination could be simply unsatisfactory performance practicing law that hadn't been related to a social identity.
I would add that being a brandname influencer can upstage senior associates, partners, and chairpersons. That's likely not smart at a Cravath, Paul Weiss, Latham, and Wilmer Hale. Those organizations orbit in the prestige force field. No junior lawyer should come up against that kind of wattage.
Overall, in many industries it's too risky to be out there as an named entity active on social. For instance, by accident confidential information or organizational points of view which should be kept under wraps can be disclosed. And a grown-up job is too valuable to put at such risk.
One more thing: Being an influencer sucks up a lot of time. Most professionals in demanding jobs can't spare those kinds of hours off-duty.
When I (who is self-employed) had been an influencer in the legal sector through a syndicated blog and repurposing on LinkedIn and Twitter, it was a source of income. That is in the early days of social. But as competition for eyeballs kept increasing more and more effort had to be put in. No longer was the ROI, from creativity to sweat equity, worth it. I exited that influencer space in June 2022. Good riddance.
None of the clients for my intuitive coaching practice are active on social, with the exception of postings on old-line Facebook which only lovers seem to read to monitor their current or former soulmates.
