Controversy No Longer Marketable - Poof Go Don Lemon, Tucker Carlson, Alissa Heinerscheid, and More
There is a school of thought in the public relations industry that controversy is a useful tool for getting, holding, and growing attention. Maybe now change "is" to "was."
Controversy is becoming downright unmarketable. If that's your personal brand, don't apply to X or Y or a growing number of organizations for work.
Today controversial anchors CNN's Don Lemon and Fox's Tucker Carlson parted ways with their employers. Provocative consumer-product publicist Alissa Heinerscheid is currently on a leave of absence from overseeing Bud Light. Her controversial use of transgender Dylan Mulvaney stirred up a hornet's nest costing the brand about $6 billion.
Over in the world of finance Apollo co-founder Leon Black has paid a steep reputational price for his association with the controversial Jeffery Epstein.
In the staid law-firm sector David Boies, co-founder of Boies Schiller, still hasn't recovered from the controversy of representing Harvey Weinstein. Incidentally, law firm Paul Weiss has ended its representation of Black.
When it comes to social mores, are we being pulled back to the conformity of the Eisenhower era? It wasn't until that dashing young John F. Kennedy hit the political scene could we boomers begin to loosen up. From how we dressed to the hoops we had to jump through to get into college we had been as much a silent generation as our parents.
The flight from controversy could shape the presidential campaign of 2024. Any candidate too out there in positions could be squashed.
Is Disney's Return of the Hero CEO Bob Iger too outsized, that is, too much of a deviation from the traditional low-key CEO? Overall, financial media has been enjoying pointing out his previous mistakes such as overpaying for Fox and in streaming going after growth in subscriptions versus profirs.
