Probaby Missed Window on Raising Chickens, Too - No Employment-Secure Sectors as Tech, Consulting, and More Implode
"Earlier this year: Damn, big
tech is sinking. Go back to consulting Now: Damn, consulting doesn’t seem
that great either. Time to switch to industry Later: woah, federal
government? Later : Raise cows" - Fishbowl Consulting, April 20, 2023
In addition, things
no longer look so hot in creating a chicken farm for eggs. MSN reports that egg
prices have finally "cracked." For too long a dozen of those
delivered the sticker shock of six bucks a dozen or more.
One laid-off
security professional I have coached had been determined to raise chickens.
Among the risks I brought to his attention were the chickens being hit with a
disease/attacked by predators - or egg prices returning to normal. Fortunately,
he went on to explore other entrepreneurial ventures.
But unlike so many
traditional careerists that potential chicken farmer might have been on the
right track. That is, moving in the direction of starting up his own micro
enterprise. More of my clients, even when they still have day jobs, have
decided that some kind of hold on income security could come self-employment.
For them that umbrella term includes doing gig assignments such as tutoring
(which can bill at $50 to $70 hourly), delivering food (big tips), or
babysitting (which can go for up to $30 an hour).
The elephant in the
room during the current trend of massive layoffs in once-stable career paths is
that it may not be a blip. The whole game of recruiting, hiring, retaining,
promoting, and motivating could be undergoing a fundamental shift. For example,
more organizations are integrating AI ChatGPT and its competitors to approach
strategy and operations in new ways. Read that "more cost-efficient,"
as in reducing the expense of manpower.
Very quickly the news last November about
the ChatGPT3 release moved from look-at-this to the rush by organizations to applications.
Both establishment media such as Insider and social networks are full of
descriptions of introducing generative AI to whatever. Insider itself is
using it for its stories. Job search platform Zippia projects that
2030, automation will eliminate 73 million jobs.
The old joke that
mankind plans but the gods laugh currently has a cruel bite. That's especially
in professional services.
Lawyers are being
cut loose in a glutted job market. They may never land comparable positions.
Their careful
planning has included getting high grades in the right schools, passing the
bar, being hired by a brandname firm, and competing to hold onto those
positions, and maybe be voted in as partner. Then poof.
It could be a
necessary adjustment to the new realities of earning income that we invest
less. That could range from advanced education to how we put together our
identity. Is the takeaway: Not to take “it” so seriously?
