More Gush About Paul Weiss' Job Openings - Yes, It's Safe to Apply Since No History of Layoffs


 

Yesterday's post on Fishbowl Big Law about multiple corporate-groups job openings at Paul Weiss continues to generate buzz.

Today the meme has shifted from omg, someone is hiring to yes, this is a safe place to apply to because, unlike so many other large law firms, there haven't been layoffs. Here is a snippet:

"Every other firm is groaning under the strain of having too many hands and not enough work, while PW is signaling that they’re as busy as ever (and not just Apollo’s in house counsel). From what I understand, PW didn’t do any layoffs so they’re optically a safer choice than most shops at the moment."

It's useful to note that in the worst of legal-employment times - 2008 - 2009 - Paul Weiss also didn't lay off. Its competitors did. Historic was Latham's cutting loose more than 400 in one day. I was coaching at the time and despair was assessed as being aligned with employment realities. 

It is interesting to note that 2008 was the first year the new chair Brad Karp was in that job. That no-layoff decision helped shape his brand. 

The current hiring is another brand-shaper as Karp starts another term of leadership at Paul Weiss. His previous contract was up in May 2023. Karp is 63. He could have a long runway ahead in this job. At Jones Day Stephen Brogan remained the head until he was 70. That was beyond Jones Day's usual retirement age.
