It Happens All The Time (still) - Apollo Deals with "Inappropriate Behavior"

"Apollo Global Management Inc. has fired Dylan Foo, a partner and the firm’s head of infrastructure, over inappropriate behavior and policy violations, the firm said." - Bloomberg, August 18, 2023 

It - that is, myriad versions of "inappropriate behavior" - used to happen all the time. But if the alleged or proven miscreant was powerful, a high producer, a rainmaker or simply had excellent air coverage not much happened. Those reporting the supposed misdeeds usually were the ones punished. 

That should have changed when value systems shifted to not tolerating those kinds of conduct. In 2017, what was supposedly going on at 21st Century Fox was investigated by a major law firm - Paul Weiss. Cable broadcast giant Roger Ailes stepped down. What then followed, as we well know, were growing numbers of executive abrupt exits in a broad range of sectors.

And, the assumption was that those who wanted to hold onto their jobs would not cross the lines. Obviously that didn't happen. The it still happens all the time, despite the new career consequences. 

Now hard-charging Apollo also has had to manage that phenomenon of somepne way up in the food chain who ignored the rules. Typically what is in the media have been reports of brilliant strategies to rebrand what was primarily a private equity giant. CEO Mark Rowan is making a go of the transition to private credit. 

So here we are. There is much speculation about how anyone who can get up that high in an organization could not have the judgment, smarts, political moves and impulse control to hold on to what they got. 

However, there is no one answer. In my intuitive career coaching diligent driven human beings come to me because they have self-destructed professionally. Each saga is unique. There is a confluence of so many intersecting factors which create behavior from which there is no point of return. Most have had to start over again professionally.

America Not Hiring in 2026: Back to Golden Age of Solopreneurs?

 For hiring, 2025 was a brutal year to search for a job. The Wall Street Journal reports that 2026 could be worse: "At a gathering of CEOs in Midtown Manhattan this month organized by the Yale School of Management, 66% of leaders surveyed said they planned to either fire workers or maintain the size of their existing teams next year. Only a third indicated they planned to hire." The WSJ adds that pullback from adding manpower could be temporary. Scott Barshay's Leadership at Paul, Weiss Torpedoed, PR Nothing But a Joke, Sympathy for Brad Karp

  Last week was a bad, gone worse and worse, one for law firm Wachtell.   This week starts out as what could upend the new leadership of Scott Barshay (The Decider) at Paul, Weiss.  Today's very long-form article in The New York Times  by Michael Schmidt and Jessica Silver-Greenberg depicts Barshay negatively. Understatement. He is rolled out as one-dimensionally power-driven, abrasive, divisive and downright naive about the power of the media. About the latter, he blew off any concern about the media's response to the law firm's removing from the website the Center to Combat Hate.  An example of the beating delivered Barshay? Here is the NYT coverage of the response by some at Paul, Weiss when Barshay was hired: "But there was unease among some at Paul Weiss. Partners and associates learned from lawyers at Cravath that some people there were not unhappy to see Mr. Barshay go. His ego made him difficult to work with, the Paul Weiss lawyers were told."
