Episode 6 of "Feud: Capote vs The Swans" - Time Entraps a Lost Generation of the Self-Absorbed

"We had our time." Says C. Z. Guest in the Hulu streaming series "Feud: Capote vs The Swans," episode 6.

Truman Capote captures the pickle he is in with, "I've gone out of style."

And Babe Paley goes to a posh department store to purchase gloves, only to be told that such inventory belongs to another era - or at Lord & Taylor.

Today - each new episode streams on Thursdays - the meme is about getting caught in another time period and lacking the strength, drive and imagination to exit into the present.

The vitality of a writing career and the creativity of putting together special events such as the Black and White Ball are on hold for Capote. Meanwhile those others in that orbit drift purposeless.

Obviously, in the current era where we not only have to be totally present but five minutes ahead, there are plenty of lessons embedded in this Lost Generation of former style-setters.

At the top of the list is: Leave your ossified circle. Way back in the 1970s, sociologist Mark Granovetter documented the professional wisdom of that in his research on "weak ties" in networking.

Those weak-tie relationships are with just about anyone and everyone not encountered in the usual course of being a professional. And through them can come breakthrough professional opportunities. In the familiar circles you all are taking in the same stale air - just like Capote and The Swans.

After my industry collapsed post-9/11 and I grabbed a survival job in a big box the assistant manager pushed me to identify the skills I had - and didn't know about. In eight months I launched a digital communications boutique. More recently as AI ate my lunch, dinner and breakfast, of all people, a head of a major law firm - Brad Karp at Paul, Weiss - awakened me to a set of talents I never had really "owned."

Takeaway 2 is getting it that nothing fails like success. In boomeranging back to head Disney Bob Iger had to learn not to be an old media guy any longer. That was holding him back. So, yeah, get with the new program. Time will tell how well he can detach.

Third is to engage. The "Feud" characters had lost the ability to interact, therefore put in play the wonderful things generated by the very human process of a deep conversation. No, they can't talk with each other. What could happen if CEO Sundar Pickai at distressed Google could really talk with the team?

In my intuitive coaching I have found that the number-one obstacle in clients' moving up or forward after a setback is allowing the past to cast a spell over them. That's a force field of black magic.
