The White Collar Wasteland - That Labor Market Collapse Overtakes Hollywood.

Glam sector Hollywood, ranging from production to scripting, has always been 1) Hard to break into and 2) Even harder to sustain one's reputation and keep getting assignments.

Now, corporate consolidation and technology, all driven by cost-efficiency, is restructuring every aspect of the Hollywood labor market. There is not only less work. That work tends to be paying less and taking more time for the payment to be made. A big brandname, with a list of awards, no longer ensures making a good living.

What's has been called the "White Collar Recession" has made its way into America's loved entertainment business. That downturn seems to be mutating into an actual "wasteland" across a growing number of sectors. They include tech, human resources, management consulting, graphic arts, marketing, content-creation and some practice areas in law.

Consequently more knowledge workers and creatives have to let go of the hope of a turnaround - at least soon enough to make ends meet - and consider career change. What is happening now in the knowlege-worker labor market could wind up being a long-term restructuring of many kinds of white collar work. They are biting the bullet and toying with the possibility of career change.

In this article published in O'Dwyer's Public Relations, I point out that career change can be a brutal transition. Not an adventure. Usually it's even more of an upheaval than going from the protected situation of being a student to the realities of what it takes to earn a living. The ordeal can be even more of a disruptor for those 50 years of age or older. Only one in 10 of those forced out, if they do land work, will earn comparable compensation.

As an intuitive coach I counsel a shift from methodically following success formuals established by the supposed experts to allowing yourself to become an open system. That allows for opportunity to be spotted and tested out. Meanwhile the line between white, blue and pink collars is blurring. What has emerged is the single category called "work."

And having work gets you more work. Grab a job or a contract assignment, then go on from there. That's a solid platform to build sources of revenue in the mutating labor market.
