Shift in the Political Landscape: Old Ties
For years large law firm Paul Weiss has represented Apollo in legal actions, especially deals. That could position it for unique access in providing input on the big-time national money issues. That is, if Donald Trump decides to give the nod to Apollo CEO Marc Rowan as Treasury Secretary.
As The New York Times reports, Trump has broadened his search for that role. On it is currently Rowan. That shouldn't be a stunner. A few days ago on Yahoo Finance (owned by Apollo) Rowan gave high marks for Trump's approach to national leadership. The headline read:
"Trump admin. is going to bring needed change: Apollo's Marc Rowan"
Access inside the beltway is everything. It is critical for law firms since they need to advocate for their clients's issues. Immediately after the announcement of the conservative landslide it appeared that progressive law firms such as Paul Weiss would be locked out. During the Biden Administration that law firm was well known for being well-connected with liberal insiders.
However, as power resets on the national level Paul Weiss could wind up again well-positioned. Many of its clients, as with Apollo, are Wall Street firms. They have been visible in their support of Trump. Actually they are euphoric about Trump's deregulation mission.
Chair of Paul Weiss since 2008, Brad Karp is a master networker. In addition, he has had hands-on experience with Wall Street's legal challenges. His early career as a litigator, for example, involved directly representing financial institutions such as Citi, JP Morgan, Bank of America and UBS.
With M&A coming back, Paul Weiss could have another boom year. Recently it has reported record profits and revenues:
"Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, citing growth in all five of its core practice areas, saw its overall revenue climb 10.9% to $2 billion, a firm high. Paul Weiss also crossed the $6.5 million mark in profits per equity partner for the first time, also a firm record."
Paul Weiss has seemed to keep separate its orientation for pursuing social justice and its assisting Wall Street to achieve its capitalistic objectives. During the shifting political landscape, it might tone down the former.
