We Want Connection, Even If It Has Rough Spots Like Trump's - Harris As The Wizard of Oz

From the celebrity hoopla to Kamala Harris' refusal to meet in real time with supporters during the night as it looked like a Trump landslide the Harris campaign had been carefully scripted.

That's in contrast to the raw rhetoric of Donald Trump. And in this time of economic, spiritual, social and over-65 aging distress we prefer direct connection. Actually we demand it as the results of voting in Election 2024 showed.

Not that Harris didn't have moments of seeming authenticity. The high points included the effective for Democrats debate with Donald Trump. This seemingly was a woman on her feet, standing toe to toe with a man whose signature was being unpredictable.

But all that had been methodically planned and rehearsed. Genius in public relations (as well as tech litigation) law firm Paul Weiss partner Karen Dunn (who had also handled Hillary Clinton) was Harris' coach for that breakthrough debate performance art.

Overall, like the Wizard of Oz, Harris didn't come from behind the curtain. Her opponent who is sized up as "deeply flawed" did. That hiding extended beyond who I am to policies. Trump was more concrete in what he would do or not do.

Not only did Harris go down. The Wall Street Journal notes:

"'This is a historic disaster of Biblical proportions. The Democratic Party, as it is, is dead." [Says] Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.)."

“'Something is definitely wrong with the Democratic brand,' said Matt Bennett, a founder of the center-left think tank Third Way."

In my coaching I hammer that even in very formal interviews for jobs and promotions there has to be a connection. Let "them" in.

During the Harris campaign, be it Barack or Oprah or Kamala, no one let us in. We didn't find out who they were and they didn't seem to give a damn who we are.
