A Society's Folk Heroes, Like Alleged Killer of Brian Thompson - What to Think, What to Do
During The Great Depression Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were folk heroes.
There is widespread hope that three who escaped from the grim federal pen Alcatraz managed to survive. They were Clarence Anglin, John Anglin and Frank Morris.
And here we have in these inflationary times with those good white-collar jobs going poof and medical bills the number-one cause for personal bankruptcy. There is massive support for the man who allegedly murdered health insurance CEO Brian Thompson. The headline in The Wall Street Journal reads:
"Manhunt for UnitedHealthcare CEO Killer Meets Unexpected Obstacle: Sympathy for the Gunman"
The mystical tarot is about right living. So, it's coming up in tarot readings a kind of plea for "permission" to not condemn the alleged killer. Clients share with me their reluctance to "turn him in," if they ever encounter him.
Well, as we know, the American legal system, among the best in the world, is not necessarily about justice. It's about the law. It's the professional responsibility of lawyers to approach legal matters so that they are operating in the best interests of their clients.
Many of us didn't fault law firm Williams and Connolly for taking on the role of defense for Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Some law firm had to. This is civilization.
Also, many of us rolled our eyes when the 2020 fossil-fuel protestors from Harvard Law School stood outside Paul Weiss US headquarters because Exxon was a client. Hey, the E-technology remains primitive. My e-bike leaves much to be desired. Given the Trump Administration's skepticism about EVs, Paul Weiss could be saluted as on the right side of technological history.
So, for this right-living issue we really can't turn to the law, can we. But we sure have to be aware of what the law has to say about obstructing what it defines as "justice." I warn clients to not stand in the way of any of the moving parts.
There is also karma. That concept ensures that what we do in this life will have consequences for us in this life as well as the next. (If you believe in reincarnation, there could be any number of next lives.) We can leave it to karma to have the right thing done.
On April 27th of this year my much-loved Smart Car was destroyed in an accident and I wound up transported to the hospital. Tethered to machines I assumed I would have to file for bankruptcy for the bill. I had never been through that before. Thanks to United Healthcare, yes United Healthcare, and State Farm, I only had to pony up out-of-pocket about $700. The paperwork went rather quickly.
From the wisdom of crowds, we know that the thinking of the mob might often be solid. However, currently civilizations around the world are in a fragile state of affairs. We might err on the side of conventional mores to prevent global collapse.
