March 14, 2025 Day of Infamy in America - The US President's DOJ Speech + Like Covington, Perkins Coie, Paul Weiss Loses Security Clearances

Today - March 14, 2025, a Friday - will be right up there with other days of infamy in the history of America.

Most vivid in our Boomer collective memory bank is Saturday October 20, 1973. US President Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire Archibald Cox. Richardson refused and resigned. Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus also refused and resigned. Robert Bork, in a senior position at the Department of Justice, did the dirty work. Perhaps there is karma. Bork was rejected for a seat on the US Supreme Court. His "brand" never recovered.

It's not unthinkable that even in these dark times, eventually karma will play out again. The front lines of the Trump administration could be "Borked."

This Friday the grim situation worsened for the supposed enemies of US President Donald Trump.

In a speech of DOJ - here you can experience the tone and full content of that address - US President Donald Trump unleashed a warning of severe punishment for those who had opposed him or had not been aligned with his ideologies. Even imprisonment was mentioned.

High on the list of alleged miscreants were lawyers. This President singled out Mark Pomerantz and Marc Elias. You bet, they could become types of political martyrs. Obviously an arctic blast went through parts of the legal sector which had been known as "progressive."

Part of the penalty already has been a loss of business for Perkins Coie. That was a direct result of the Executive Order which stripped lawyers of their security clearances. The action essentially ended their ability to practice law as well as enter federal buildings to represent clients in-person. Earlier Covington lawyers at Covington also had their security clearances yanked.

Today Paul Weiss, always in the front lines of social justice, has also had its security clearances put on-hold. As Bloomberg Law reports there has been yet another executive order.

"Trump ordered that the clearances be pulled 'pending a review of whether such clearances are consistent with the national interest,' White House spokesman Harrison Fields said in a Friday post on X."

Here is a copy of that Executive Order.

This targeting, unfortunately, has been predictable.

Among the prominent lawyers at Paul Weiss are "alumni" of the Obama administration. They include Loretta Lynch and Jeb Johnson.

The chair Brad Karp had been an aggressive and effective fundraiser for the Kamala Harris campaign.

Since becoming chair in 2008, Karp also has put his personal imprint on initiatives for aiding the most vulnerable. The iconic example was, at the outbreak of COVID, mobilizing thousands of lawyers in other firms to work pro-bono. That was to establish a free digital resource for both individuals and businesses for how to get assistance. At the time, a blindsided nation didn't know where to turn. During my most difficult professional transition, Karp was there for me, both emotionally and in more concrete ways.

His most recent missions such as diversity have become specific targets for the Trump administration. In the campaign for increased admission of people of color at the University of Michigan in the 1970s I had lost my job. I never regretted that sacrifice.

Typically my tarot readings - a tool The New York Times recommends for self-awareness - are provided to lawyers for business matters. Yes, I know your business. The myriad nuances.
