PR Nightmare? But, Paul Weiss Still Had Busy Q1

 What goes on in public opinion - and for Paul Weiss there had been plenty of that - can be irrelevant when it comes right down to the business. 

Despite that "public relations nightmare," associated with dealmaking with the Trump administration the law firm had a busy Q1. For example, as Bloomberg Law reports:

"Paul Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison is guiding online mortgage provider Rocket Cos.’ plan to buy Mr. Cooper Group Inc. in an all-stock deal is valued at $9.4 billion."

In addition, during the quarter Paul Weiss also led Rocket’s plan to buy Redfin Corp. for $1.75 billion. 

The firm is known to do excellent work and with so much at stake in these kinds of transactions businesses will choose or stick with those law firms having a track record in that niche. 

Paul Weiss' positive business performance amid being hammered in the court of public opinion isn't atypical.

In the past when Big Oil was under fire by myriad constituencies many of those corporations were still making record profits. Here is the post in which I discuss the disconnect between what goes on in public affairs and the creation of profits.

Will Skadden, which remains on the PR hot seat, be as fortunate as Paul Weiss in its business matters? Business development is one of the responsibilities of CMO Luke Ferrandino. Until recently he had been the CMO at Paul Weiss. If he had remained at the latter would he be having an easier time overseeing bringing in business? A hit to Skadden's business will be interesting to observe and analyze.

Incidentally, as Reddit Big Law indicates more well-positioned lawyers in major law firms are launching their own solo practices. AI tools make that transition easier.

Poaching in Law Firm Sector Potentially Catastrophic When Clients Exit with Partners

" ...  when clients refuse to follow partners out of the firm ..." - Brad Karp, chair of Paul, Weiss, cites how that can mitigate the risks, ranging from branding to business development, associated with the massive poaching of law-firm stars. This observation by Karp is extracted from the panel's comments at the International Bar Association, May 15, 2024 and published in Law.com .  The panel of leaders focused on internal law-firm strategies to reduce partner flight. Essentially their consensus was this solution: creating a partner culture of belonging, purpose and equality. About the latter, too many junior partners have an identity of being very senior associates.  However, come on, stars come and stars go. Akin Gump Julia Ghahramani's March 2021 Cocaine+ Death - So?

   It had been way back more than a year ago that first-year associate at law firm Akin Gump Julia Ghahramani died from cocaine laced with fentanyl. Yet that story keeps resurfacing.  This week  RollonFriday  revisits it. And  Reddit Big Law  considers the issue if the energy from cocaine is what's making possible those 2,500 hours billed in law firms.  Is what's keeping this on the radar the hunch that use of the illegal substance cocaine is common among those practicing law? After all, in addition to being an energy-booster, it provides a nice reward for such hard-working lawyers. Also, they have the earnings to afford it.
