So What Defines the Times? Smirk, It's Not Media, Big Law, The Earnest (read your bible)

A sign she herself has become irrelevant Anna Wintour is quoted in the New York Post as pontificating:

" ...  I believe [what] a great editor does – she defines the times.”

Probably it was with the internet that society stopped paying attention to media. Influencers, who replaced media, only have about eight years to shape the culture. And along the way they can and often do self-destruct. Never again will there be a forever revered media presence like Edward R. Murrow or Walter Cronkite.

Gonzo, at least for now, is also the reach of law firms in defining a time. Consider the intersection of:

Fierce escalating global competition in the sector

The absolute power of the Trump administration

The threat to their business clients from tariffs and

More.

Erased is their ability to reset values. Law firms, ranging from Paul Weiss to Motley Rice, once change agents, are just a business. They have to be. Their focus primarily has to be "sticking to the knitting" - a concept made standard in business since the 1982 publication of "In Search of Excellence" by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman.

For Paul Weiss the first sticking to the knitting was to prevent the collapse of the entire law firm because of the Executive Order.  The second has to be navigating what could be another global recession post-Liberation Day.

And, what about those activists who have track records for disruptions such as introducing sexual freedom and blowing up much of a class caste system inherited from England? Sure, there are the Rachel Cohen types who are receiving plenty of attention. They're on their way to becoming influencers.

But overall that force field we call "resistance" is on-hold. That could be for a long while. In intuitive coaching/tarot-reading sessions some clients of alternate sexual orientations are telling me that they're retreating back to the closet. No, you won't find them on any public front line of any movement.

So, who does define the times? It's those with absolute power. Not high intelligence, noble missions, Ivy education, title in professional services, charisma or even good looks. This isn't new. In "Genesis" is captured the absolute power of Yahweh. With a single edict that entity set in play a very difficult path for human beings.

Meanwhile, this is no time to be poor. I hammer to clients: Money is survival.
