No Longer Am I Accepting "Unretire" Clients, with One Exception

Financial salvation for boomers and the oldest of Gen X probably is the outcome of investments. So, all eyes should be on the Dow and more and strategies about shifting out of the dogs and toward what's currently more promising.

The good news is that Dow Jones is up today:

So, those who had managed to free up funds to invest during their careers have hope.

Those who retired without investments and now feel they should unretire to not outlive their funds have less hope. Okay, some have been lucky. About 1.5 million of those determined to unretire have found employment.

The rest are coming to coaches such as myself to gear up to become employable. I no longer accept that kind of client. With an exception: if they demonstrate the hustle to start their own small business.

The reality is that what it takes to get and hold work is so different from they experienced even a few years ago.

The application process is driven by AI. That might cover every aspect ranging from the keywords on a resume to how to navigate an automated video interview. In addition, there have been myriad technologies now considered standard even for low-paying jobs. Employers want that advanced tech mastery listed on the resume.

How about what's now marketable? You used to be a content-creator. Forget that. How are you with ChatGPT prompts and then editing what pops out? Much of that requires a recent work history. There's less and less tolerance for resume gaps. Things have been changing too fast. Employers know you're rusty. They can't afford the time and resources to "oil" those rusty parts.

There's also the shock of the devaluation of academic degrees. Most, beyond the BA/BS, have become a liability. One client couldn't surrender to the reality that two Masters degrees were two too many for most ways to get hired.

Also, once on the job there's the brutal getting-used-to that employers have so much control.  The attitude, documents The Wall Street Journal, is that employees are "replaceable." Don't like conditions? Better not complain. You could be shown the door. The unretired who had once been treated well as "talent," frequently can't endure such lack of respect for expertise.

But there's plenty of potential in embracing entrepreneurship. Several clients have launched enterprises, both in-person and online, selling used whatever. Others created services for the elderly and pets. About the latter, one took a dog/cat grooming course and invested savings in purchasing a mobile van. There's also a demand for licensed residential cleaning services. If you're clever and uncover a gap in which people need or want you can be on the way to being the next Amazon.

Takeaway: Just because you decide to unretire doesn't mean there are slots to move into. This represents a major rite of passage, bigger than the ordeal of finishing formal education and embracing the rules of the work world. This time you have so much to unlearn and assumptions to shake off.
