Keeping Up with US-Headquartered Law Firms in England and More: What Could Be in It for You
Competitive pressures have driven law firms headquartered in the US to expand their footprint in England. Remember the dog fight for partner talent for the London offices of Kirkland & Ellis and Paul, Weiss. The latter conducted several raids.
Why you may wonder what those firms are up to? Well, here is one factor. But, I will introduce another later.
As you probably know: On professional anonymous networks Reddit and Fishbowl there are often queries about openings in the London branches for junior lawyers. To stay current with what those firms are doing, especially in London, a useful source is Brit legal tabloid RollonFriday.
There is a special Newswire section which updates the firms' activities, both those US and London headquartered.
For example, here is a snippet about Paul, Weiss. At the end of July 2025:
"Paul, Weiss advised Brinley Partners, LP, an alternative asset manager specializing in private credit, on a $4 billion commitment as part of a strategic partnership with a leading U.S. insurance company. In the initial phase of the partnership, Brinley will deploy $1 billion to launch a collateralized loan obligation, the first in a planned series of rolling vintages."
These snippets also provide the law firms the platform to tell their broader story, be it about all their locations, practices or career opportunities.
For less standard intel go to RollonFriday's regular columns as well as results of surveys such as the firms associates love the most.
Another reason to reach beyond the US markets? And not just in the legal sector.
In coaching, I am finding that more US professionals are considering everything from education to affordability to jobs beyond our borders. One lawyer who had been let go at a major law firm decided to sort out by teaching English in China. That broadened their horizons and they went on become licensed back in America in commercial real estate.
This isn't new, of course. Just more common. When I was lost in my 20s I perched in Barcelona, Spain and looped into a version of the hospitality industry. I gained the confidence for an eventual career shift.
BusinessInsider chronicles many of those experiments. For the logistics there is International Living.
