Reddit Remains Safe Haven for Human Users, Not Behind a Paywall

Reddit is becoming a heady player in Generative AI. For instance, as The Wall Street Journal documents Reddit is:

" ... a top-cited source for queries from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google Gemini. Reddit was the top source for Google and Perplexity from August of 2024 though last month, according to a June 5 report from search analytics firm Profound."

But, as yet, that's not a big money-maker. The bulk of its revenue comes from advertising. That has grown 84% from last year. And the ad business depends on human eyeballs. That means that Reddit will continue to be a platform oriented for human users. In the recent quarter, in the US it had 50.3 million users. 

So, as a coach I can continue to guide those seeking intel and insight about their professional life to, yes, go to Reddit. It's free, not behind any paywall. There will be a subreddit or multiple subreddits which are a perfect fit for what they need to know or reflect on.

Users can simply follow a subreddit such as Big Law or Consulting or Public Relations to get the scoop. Make it a morning habit. 

In addition, they can anonymously (Reddit is an anonymous professional network) post a query. That could take the form of:

What is the culture of the New York City M&A practice at Kirkland & Ellis, Davis Polk and Paul Weiss?

Is management consulting a sector in decline?

Do I need to start out in an agency in order to get a good job in communications in a large corporation?

The responses include those from experienced professionals in that sector as well as those just starting out who share the challenges they have endured so far. The ethos is caring. And there are responses to the responses. That increases the credibility and utility of the input.

Also, there is "breaking news" which makes it to Reddit before the legacy media such as Bloomberg Law or CNBC publishes about the development. Users can be ahead of the curve. 

Me? For my psychic practice - which I have been growing in the last three years - I post queries on the subreddit r/psychic. That's how I stay current with what's going on in the global market. The responses are very business-oriented.

So here we are: Reddit remains, at least for now, a platform for humans. Let's hope it doesn't go behind a paywall. Interesting is this: In a survey by Abovethelaw.com one question was if I would continue to click in if the now-free legal tabloid was behind a paywall. My answer? No.

Scott Barshay's Leadership at Paul, Weiss Torpedoed, PR Nothing But a Joke, Sympathy for Brad Karp

  Last week was a bad, gone worse and worse, one for law firm Wachtell.   This week starts out as what could upend the new leadership of Scott Barshay (The Decider) at Paul, Weiss.  Today's very long-form article in The New York Times  by Michael Schmidt and Jessica Silver-Greenberg depicts Barshay negatively. Understatement. He is rolled out as one-dimensionally power-driven, abrasive, divisive and downright naive about the power of the media. About the latter, he blew off any concern about the media's response to the law firm's removing from the website the Center to Combat Hate.  An example of the beating delivered Barshay? Here is the NYT coverage of the response by some at Paul, Weiss when Barshay was hired: "But there was unease among some at Paul Weiss. Newly Minted PhDs in Economics Face Unwelcoming Job Market: Of Course, I Left My PhD in Humanities Off the Resume

Monitor postings on Reddit subunits focused on careers and it's no longer news that PhDs, both newly minted and those already in the labor market, generally are finding the credential an obstacle in the search for a job or even contract assignments.
