Status Setback: You're Not Among Marquee Names in Epstein Files (like Noam Chomsky)

 The late Jeffrey Epstein was a collector of people. That represented a separate category in what he was up to. They didn't have to represent a means to increase Epstein's wealth. Instead, they were given access if they had unique expertise and reach. Then they could be placed as one of those marquee names in his files. Genius in linguistics and well-connected in politics Noam Chomsky was selected for the collection. The relationship essentially was intellectual.  

The reality of Chomsky's name popping up in the recent release of the Epstein files - yes, there was a major dump today - enhances his reputation. Not hurt it as it had, for example, source of wealth for Epstein: Apollo co-founder Leon Black. That reputational blow had been so severe that his long-term law firm Paul, Weiss made it public in a 2022 BusinessInsider interview that it no longer represented Black.

Unlike Black, it could have added to your brand equity if the world discovered in today's partial access to those files that you had been chosen to have been a marquee player. Many who fancy themselves "thought leaders" likely wouldn't have been of much interest to Epstein. Factor in this: Ever since you could publish your thinking without having the permission of gatekeepers thought leaders became a dime a dozen. Their platforms include self-publishing books, blogging, social media/social networks, podcasting, YouTube and TikTok. Megaphones were and are everywhere.

Since his stroke, Chomsky has been less active in public. But this recent attention via the Epstein files reminds us what a presence he had been in linguistics. In a sense he created that field. Because of his influence I studied linguistics in my doctoral studies. Later I assisted in preparing articles for professionals in that niche. You bet, Chomsky merits this second glance.

Mr. Paul Weiss Goes to Washington

In college, backgrounders state that Brad Karp, the long-time chair of law firm Paul Weiss, toyed with the idea of a career path in politics. The specific focus was about running for Congress. Instead, though, he accepted admission to Harvard Law School (turned down the one to Yale) and that was that. Now, during the current crisis for law firms, under comprehensive attack by the Trump administration, Karp seems to be showcasing his inner politico. The guy is a smart strategist. Semafor reports that Karp has gone to Washington. There his objective seems to be to create lines of communication with a power force which, as Steve Bannon puts it, wants his firm and other elite firms out of business.
