"Twas the Night Before Christmas: $50 Tip for Tarot Reading

If those in content-creation, even the marketing communications side, haven't heard that they probably know that's what those dishing out assignments are thinking. That's based on how they're treated and what they're being paid.

I held on until about four years ago. Then no longer could I nurture the magical thinking of return to the good old days. Yes, at one time my particular kind of talent was in demand. We could bill a buck and a quarter a word. One year I received a bonus of $4k on a contract job. 

To my amazement, I took the needed action. I exited content-creation. But there was an emotional lag. I call it "soul ache." 

Executive coach Henry Cloud refers to the process as "Necessary Endings." Probably more don't do one of those necessary endings and hang on to compete on Upwork for two-cents a word assignments because they can't envision entering that force field of so much upheaval in feelings as well as identity.

But, finally I have caught up with how I have been earning income for the past several years. 


My new path has been a mashup of intuitive coaching and tarot reading. I had been doing some of that for a long time but not taking the skill cluster seriously for income - and identity. 

After my 40-year-career in content-creation collapsed there was the "Ah-ha" moment: This stuff is marketable. I took a few workshops and was in business.

So far, so very good. I just received a $50 tip for a 30-minute tarot reading. I even turned down the offer of a full-time coaching position. When a content client from way back approached me to do an ad, I said: Don't do that, not anymore."

The gift those who need to shift careers can give themselves this Christmas is the belief that they can get through to the other side of transition. Just the belief. After that, the rest will fall into place. Success is an inside job. 

Success is a mental game. Failure comes from being done in by the “committee” in your head.

Mr. Paul Weiss Goes to Washington

In college, backgrounders state that Brad Karp, the long-time chair of law firm Paul Weiss, toyed with the idea of a career path in politics. The specific focus was about running for Congress. Instead, though, he accepted admission to Harvard Law School (turned down the one to Yale) and that was that. Now, during the current crisis for law firms, under comprehensive attack by the Trump administration, Karp seems to be showcasing his inner politico. The guy is a smart strategist. Semafor reports that Karp has gone to Washington. There his objective seems to be to create lines of communication with a power force which, as Steve Bannon puts it, wants his firm and other elite firms out of business.
