JD Class of 2030, You Should Have Gotten the Memo ...
Currently elite large law firms are going gangbusters. Most haven't made AI operational in significant ways. So, they're hiring new associates. They're paying out the bonuses.
But some of them, such as Paul, Weiss and Sullivan and Cromwell, sketched out how career paths in the legal sector could and probably will implode. Because of AI, demand will plummet for junior lawyers. Also because of AI, a number of practices could evolve into commodities. At a number of firms fewer summer associates have been given offers for future full-time jobs. Goldman Sachs projected that automation could eliminate 44% of legal tasks. Like a Greek Chorus, those at Abovethelaw have been chanting cynical messaging about even considering pursuing a career practicing law.
Maybe the Law of Supply and Demand won't sour for new lawyers in 2026 or 2027 but the odds are that could happen eventually - and perhaps sooner than anticipated.
And now The New York Times joins them in voicing caution about applying to law school. The warning is about both the difficulty paying off student loan debt and landing a full-time job practicing law.
"New limits on student loans that go into effect this year
could make financing a degree more expensive. And artificial intelligence
threatens to bring major changes to the industry, affecting which jobs are
available and how much they pay."
Yet applications this year to law school for the 2026 -2027 academic year are up 44% from two years ago.
It's all too human to see yourself as special, therefore overcoming any current and future obstacles in landing a good job in a field that could be headed toward a contraction. We have to assume that's what's going on with the those competing to be admitted to the JD Class of 2030. We also know that they should have received the memo about potential declining opportunity.
So, that's that. Just like that's that for the many on Reddit asking advice on which advanced degree program to enroll in to supposedly get the edge in sectors being wiped out by AI, cost-efficiency mandates and downsizing in federal government. They include public relations, communications, graphic arts, software, public health, management consulting, marketing, customer service and more.
In my intuitive coaching and tarot-reading I brief clients on the shorter and shorter shelf life of a career. Therefore, it could be a lousy investment to plow a lot of money and time into preparing for any single field. It could even happen that when the training is completed the shift would have already taken place: lots fewer or no entry-level jobs.
