Smart, Educated, But Still Aging into Poverty

Blame it on living so long? Along with that are blips like being forced early into retirement and not being located (based in the serenity of rural areas) where there are part-time jobs and gigs?

Smart, educated older knowledge workers are among those the Census Bureau assigns to the poverty designation:

"In a stunning warning for the rapidly-aging U.S., poverty rose for seniors in more than 800 counties over the past five years, according to new Census Bureau estimates."

The result, Rich Dad Poor Dad Robert Kiyosaki has been warning for a while, can be homelessness.

I see that coming for a Mensa (certified as having a very high IQ) who seemed to assume they were too smart to have to worry about money.

Typical also is the former professional who lost the big job and is waiting for the next big score rather than pulling in income from any kind of work. Explicitly one informed me in a complimentary consultation that they were not going to work for 11-something an hour.

The other version which could be headed for life on the streets is, despite Medicare, being wiped out by bills related to health and personal care.

Last night I advised a former middle manager to reach back into their background to identify skills they could pitch from income. The most promising one is landscaping. We developed a marketing plan which included targeting real estate agents for staging properties going on the market.

Previously a former technical writer had unretired by getting licensed to drive a school bus. That's keeping a roof over their head and their confidence up. They may start a business in the gently-used category.

Another way to be able to pay the bills is to relocate from a rural area to where there is work. There are LCOL urban areas such as Toledo, Ohio and El Paso, Texas.

In contrast to aging into poverty, the majority of the aging who invested are financially secure, even able to do lux activities such as world travel. For some the objective is not having to dip into those accounts - at least as long as possible. Notice in the obits that the age of death seems to be often 91, not 79.

Success is a mental game. Failure comes from being done in by the “committee” in your head.

Together, we liberate your thinking. Then we change your story. And, unleash success. Meanwhile, we focus on bringing in income. That puts you in a position of strength.
