The Kathy Ruemmler Uncle Jeffrey Problem, White House, Tesla, Houdini Bills and More: Maybe No Way Back ...

 "Flowers, wine, an Hermès bag, $10,000 in Bergdorf Goodman gift cards, spa time, an Apple Watch, “1 million amex points”—that’s a list of some of the gifts Epstein sent Kathryn Ruemmler, the new [Epstein Files] documents show."

That's what The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday, after the most recent dump of the records of communications between Jeffrey Epstein and big names. Other media such as the New York Post also enthusiastically detailed the cozy relationship between former Latham partner and current Goldman Sachs top lawyer Ruemmler and the man she called "Uncle Jeffrey." 

Back on January 19, 2026, The Wall Street Journal published a very long form expose on what was already known about that. The obvious question left hanging was: So, what was Goldman going to do about this? There were statements that the board was solidly with Ruemmler. But some of the comments following the article smirked that such language is code that this Friend of Epstein is toast. 

This weekend we can envision a possible scramble at Goldman by decision-makers for damage-control. That familiar public relations ritual likely has a lot of company on this. So many other relationships were disclosed or hinted at in the release of more than 3 million pages with more to come. They reach all the way to the White House and Tesla. 

In addition to the possible institutional brand damage there's the shade thrown on the individuals such as Ruemmler. What could be her future in any aspect of the legal sector? 

Recent history shows that those in the Epstein orbit could wind up The Unforgiven. This is one crisis that influential economist Larry Summers might not be able to come back from. For example, review the downward trajectory of Leon Black. The co-founder of Apollo, he lost the title of CEO and chair there, plus stepping down from heading the board of the Museum of Modern Art. In a BusinessInsider interview law firm Paul Weiss made it explicit that it no longer represented him. 

Not even the Houdini Bills - Gates and Clinton - might again be able to escape reputational ruin. 

The dominant emotion in society may be rage. We now have documentation how the world operates in elite circles. Those with such seeming advantages associated with access and more might have to be punished severely. That fundamental of a social system goes all the back in history.

Monitor postings on Reddit subunits focused on careers and it's no longer news that PhDs, both newly minted and those already in the labor market, generally are finding the credential an obstacle in the search for a job or even contract assignments. Mr. Paul Weiss Goes to Washington

In college, backgrounders state that Brad Karp, the long-time chair of law firm Paul Weiss, toyed with the idea of a career path in politics. The specific focus was about running for Congress. Instead, though, he accepted admission to Harvard Law School (turned down the one to Yale) and that was that. Now, during the current crisis for law firms, under comprehensive attack by the Trump administration, Karp seems to be showcasing his inner politico. The guy is a smart strategist. Semafor reports that Karp has gone to Washington. There his objective seems to be to create lines of communication with a power force which, as Steve Bannon puts it, wants his firm and other elite firms out of business.
