RVs - Survival, Not Golden Years Adventure
On highways those large fully-equipped RVs, with expensive cars hooked up in the back, signal the reward of a life well-lived which provides enough funding to enjoy the golden years. At rest stops, the couples exude the contentment featured in those financial services ads.
But, as we learned from the 2020 film "Nomadland," the RV more often provides last-resort shelter for those whose life choices didn't pan out so well. The real-life Bob Wells guides RVers in survival skills, such as fixing a tire, and there is an introduction to how to pick up paid work on the road.
Now, with inflation, especially in housing, continuing there's a new wrinkle to this development. Those in HCOL (high cost of living) areas such as Silicon Valley are renting from "vanlords" RVs to move on up in creature comforts from sleeping in their cars. CNBC details this emerging lifestyle. Those in it are grateful they can now have space to cook, unlike what was possible in a car. From what I know from coaching human beings who are in a survival mode, this model could spread throughout the US. It makes financial sense.
So far, regulations haven't caught up, not with overseeing the vanlords, not where the RVs can be parked. That's the rub. The potential is high for overcharging and for enraging communities burdened with these large vehicles on the streets and having people not in their socioeconomic bracket making the setting "home."
Some nonprofits have been early adopters in ensuring there are enough facilities and safety measures where the RVs are based. Actually the models for this, I learned from those I coached, began with the growing trend of sleeping in cars. A good-night sleep was possible, thanks to those kinds of services. Get up in the morning, take your shower and off to work you go.
Another option for shelter in inflationary times with less and less paid work is to research LCOL pockets in the nation. They still exist. Affordability, for example, characterizes some cities in Ohio such as Youngstown and Toledo. However, the scary part is that the LCOL aspects could fade. The classic example are cities in Arizona such as Tucson. Once the Promise Land for the coastal aging who still wanted to work (less age bias) they are being reset for the well-to-do.
Takeaway: You may not like where you can afford to live/work. But, it prevents homelessness.
